Description
A coward is not a man who feels fear. A coward is one who would volunteer others for suffering he would not take on himself.” Emperor Lin begins her rule by finally putting an end to the horrific Tithing Festival, whereupon the Emperor would take shards from its citizens to create constructs. It is clear that Lin is not her father, her intentions truly are for the good of the empire, but even with this revolutionary act she cannot win over the people’s support. Therefore she realises, with the protection of her Captain of the Imperial Guard, her best chances are to visit each island, to return their shards in good faith, to once again prove her worth. Time is of the essence though as she hears rumours of two rebellious forces gathering on two different fronts, that being The Shardless Few and another infamous figure. Lin desperately needs an army, she needs to unite the islands. This brilliant fantasy debut has announced Andrea Stewart as quite possibly the best newcomer of the year’ Novel Notions
Of the two more central characters, I thought Lin to be the most narratively interesting. After losing her memories, her father has never deemed her worthy enough to start learning bone shard magic. She learns it herself, determined to prove her value, and that she deserves the throne. While she questions herself, especially after a certain event, she is always sure of her place and worth beyond whatever her father believes. The days we’d spent swimming and fishing at the beach, the first time I’d kissed her, the dreams we’d shared – I was now the only keeper of these memories, and that was the truest sort of loneliness. There were so many things I still wanted to tell her, to share with her.”
As with Book One, the plot moves along incrementally. But the pacing doesn’t suffer because the characters are so compelling. Whether you are rooting for them or not, they are all well-developed. There are many things to love in The Bone Shard Daughter. The first line is a powerful hook: “Father told me I’m broken.” In just five words, Stewart piques the reader’s interest in a number of ways: What kind of family dynamic is there that a father would say such a thing to his daughter? How is she “broken”? Is he right? I immediately hoped that the confrontational first line would be challenged in the narrative, and I was deeply satisfied with how Stewart handles Lin’s growth as a character and subverts the idea of Lin being broken.I read a summary of the first book before starting this (People who share great summaries should have a special place in heaven) which made me remember the details as I remembered only the major stuff. Stewart also tries to remind the readers of important things while telling the story which is something I always appreciate too.
