Description

The film is quite fast paced and benefits from having humour throughout, although there isn’t really much tension and the actual investigation is a bit laborious. A MATTER OF MURDER (1949) - there are no cast or crew credits on this poor old remnant of a film, but it's efficiently directed by John Gilling, who later went on to better things like the TV series, The Saint, and Hammer Horrors.

The plotline's not bad; a mild mannered embezzler becomes implicated in his girlfriend's murder and takes refuge in a boarding house, where he is pursued by gangsters, including John LeMesurier, who is wasted in this movie, although overall the cast are good. House of Blackmail is a 1953 British second feature [1] drama film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Mary Germaine, William Sylvester and Alexander Gauge. William Sylvester (2001: A Space Odyssey) and Mary Germaine both give good performances in their respective roles as Jimmy and Carol, the army officer and his girlfriend who have to work to try and solve the murder that has occurred, after Jimmy becomes a suspect in the case. The story follows a soldier, Jimmy (Sylvester), and his girlfriend Carol (Mary Germaine) who are implicated in the murder of blackmailer Markham (Alexander Gauge) at his isolated mansion. On the way she picks up a hitchhiker Jimmy (William Sylvester) and hatches a plan to trick the blackmailer by having Jimmy play her fiancé and lawyer. An Army officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) must solve the murder of a blackmailer or be charged themselves in this British crime drama directed by Maurice Elvey. THE HOUSE OF BLACKMAIL (1953), starring William Sylvester, a likeable American actor with an elegant and throwaway style that's ideal for this Agatha Christie-like who-dunnit, about a group of people holed up in a country manor, each suspecting the others of murdering a blackmailer. It’s about the characters’ interaction – not wanting to be alone or with any of the others either – and also keeps us guessing as to whether Jimmy is the escaped prisoner or not.

Jimmy agrees to accompany Carol to the house and pose as her lawyer in an attempt to unnerve Markham. The plot grows increasingly strained as it strives to keep us guessing just who amongst a number of shady characters has knocked off the blackmailer, and eventually falls across the line. An army officer (William Sylvester) aids a girl (Mary Germaine) trying to extricate her brother from a blackmailer's clutches. Not so action packed as some gangster movies, some shooting and killing but not gory or blood thirsty, just good old fashion movie. William Sylvester, best known later for playing Dr Heywood Floyd in 2001: A Space Odyssey, stars in one of his first roles opposite Mary Germaine in this crime drama about two people attempting to solve the murder of a blackmailer.

Genre Drama | Crime Synopsis A blackmailer is murdered, and the police find that there is a long list of suspects who wanted to see him dead. The other film is really a rough print with opening casts incomplete but I suspect adding it as a bonus was the only way it would get a DVD release.

We enjoyed it from a film history point of view, and sat through until the end, despite a terrible print and even worse sound quality. Mary Germaine is great though, and there are some attempts at lightness of touch which raises this above the average B potboiler of the time.

A hitchhiker becomes a murder suspect after he accepts a ride from a person who kills a blackmailer. A great little British Crime Drama shot in just Ten days, tracing the activities of the gang of crooks whose long run of successful coups has the police in a panic.
