However, for all the Biblical and Accounting framework, the novel is one of the most humorous and affectionate novels I have ever read. I had picked up a copy of Coe’s biography of Johnson a few years ago but never gotten around to reading it, (it is big, and not knowing anything about its subject I couldn’t justify jumping it to the front of my ever-growing ‘To Read’ list). Because it was quite short, the strong glue the printers used meant that it wouldn’t open fully unless I was going to break the spine, which I was loath to do as it’s a brand new copy (unusually for me - I prefer second hand paperbacks, and if there’s marginalia in them so much the better, it’s like stalking the intimate moments of a previous reader. For balance, Christie destroys an important letter for his supervisor and sends another to the council complaining about the grammar of the reverend’s leaflet.Johnson's funniest and most accessible novel, reissued for the first time in 25 years with a foreword by John Lanchester Christie Malry is a simple person. Acerbic yet funny, this is a novel which, even as it provokes laughter, will alarm and disturb as well. There he discovers the Double-Entry booking system, where every transaction is recorded as a debit and a credit, the end sum has to balance itself. First edition, SIGNED AND ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON TITLE-PAGE TO JUNE TILLINGHAST: 'For June from Bryan as ever [illegible] 21/2/73'. a debit must be noted; after which, society would have to be paid back appropriately, so that the paper credit would accrue to Christy's account.
