I've read stories of crackly, skipping, dust-ridden, fingerprint-ridden slabs of junk leaving this pressing plant. If you're not familiar with "Sound Affects", if it is before your time, then you simply have not fully discovered rock 'n roll. The funny thing is that a more common complaint about "gz vinyl", and I've seen it on-line myself, are inner sleeves that are too loose and that tend to buckle when you insert the record into the outer sleeve. Reading texts on Paul Weller afterwards have made it even easier to grasp the meaning of these lyrics. I am unfamiliar with any previous release that may have been remastered by him but if this is the kind of quality that comes as a result, Universal mastering should hire him to remaster the entire back catalog of the Siouxsie and the Banshees botched remasters.

The distinctive cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various BBC sound effects records of the 1970s, incorporating ‘pop-art’ imagery.Sound Affects is The Jam's fifth studio album and features the classic hit 'That's Entertainment' and the number one single 'Start! There are plenty of wonderfully catchy hooks and great songs that made me think The Jam's overblown and overrated reputation may not be entirely exaggerated. The bulk of the bonus disc is made up of songs already available on "Direction, Reaction, Creation" and "Extras". Based on a compilation I purchased, I avoided the early punk albums and started with the `Setting Sons' album. The cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various Sound Effects records produced by the BBC during the 1970s.

While I enjoyed many tracks on that album as well, I still find `Sound Affects' to be the most consistent album. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Still beloved of original fans and new supporters through Paul Weller’s solo career – he still plays many of the Jam songs in his live sets today. Sounds worthy in print, but marry talk of fighting fascists with a dangerous, paranoid guitar scrape and a whistled melody full of menace and the result is utterly thrilling. As a nice change to some of my other (audio) critical reviews, I'm pleased to finish this by saying, well done Universal Music. The vinyl was one of the very first ones in my collection, after kids records and the obligatory Electric Light Orchestra, Sweet, and - lo and behold - Public Image, Ltd.
