Description
Catherine, a successful film-maker, is intrigued when she mysteriously receives a book entitled The Perfect Stranger.
Later she became ill and more cut off from Stephen that following her death he was heartbroken and full of regret. Though the reader will see some things coming, other things they won't, and that's what makes these types of reads fun. Her husband and son seem like strangers, her job fades into insignificance and her aging mother is in the early stages of dementia. If someone had told me the entire plot before I had read the book, I would have probably not bought it and would have labeled it a woman's type of novel. There can be no doubt that Renee Knight's original premise and the slow burning revelations will keep readers keen to know just what is around the next corner and there are plenty of surprises.
Catherine finds that she is the main character in the book and that it reveals a secret that she thought only she could now know.
However, the premise was let down by a keep-you-in-the-dark plot and a series of shallow, weak and generally unlikeable characters. Catherine remains rather distant, but I suppose this is intentional, to keep the reader guessing about whether she's supposed to be sympathetic or not. This novel skillfully weaves alternating narratives (from past and present) and shows how one's horrific past can catch up and derail one's entire life.Renee Knight skilfully peels away the layers of her story to reveal a tale that is dark, deep and skin crawlingly sinister. The following day she falls asleep on the beach and her son Nicholas (aged 5), gets into difficulties in a small inflatable. Catherine Ravenscroft is a successful documentary filmmaker, happily married and seems to lead the most amazing life until one day she finds a book at her home, starts reading and realizes the book is about her. The marvel of the new suspense novel “Disclaimer” is that it lives up to its unusually gripping premise. Ok, I admit, I don't like 'keep-you-in-the-dark' plots because I am generally rubbish at guessing what's going on. Though the words might be overused, I cannot help but say that Renée Knight’s “ Disclaimer” is an astounding and outstanding debut. Disclaimer stealthily steals your attention and by the end holds you prisoner - a searing story that resonates long after the final page.A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. I've mentioned several times before that I'm not normally keen on stories set in ‘Blighty’ - just too close to home.
