Great Harwood Parish – Overseers of the Poor Accounts

Lancashire Archive PR 153

The accounts will be added as they are transcribed and checked, and in year order when possible. Not all years have survived; 1732 is the first year but there is a long gap until 1739.

The accounts can sometimes be difficult to understand in that it isn’t always clear whether an entry refers to someone who is claiming poor relief, or someone who is providing poor relief. The first year, 1732 however, does seem to be a list of those liable for paying the poor rate tax. In later years reading through the documents either shows clearly that a payment was for services or goods or it can be inferred from other entries whether someone was in receipt of relief or not.

There are some separate Constables Accounts as part of PR153 and these are added in year order with the poor law records.
