This is one of my favourite Jacqueline Wilson books, and I think Beauty is one of my favourite of her characters too - I find her very relatable, especially her vivid imagination, her awkwardness, and her love of Sara Crewe from 'A Little Princess'. Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!

I love it 🥰 how Jacquline Wilson helps us understand the needs of others it’s brilliant! The ending made me feel warm because beauty was finally happy 😃! (I don’t think that’s a spoiler The book was age-banded (as "9+") by the publisher, despite Wilson's opposition to the practice. Anyway. I couldn't put it down! I read as I was cooking, and my daughter ended up going to bed an hour late because I just had to finish the book! What a great story - I mean, I knew it all already - the horrible bullying schoolmates, not a happy home, but then escape and new friends and everything ends well. And yet... and yet... it's the characters that make the story, isn't it? Beauty with her gentle nature, and her mother - essentially that stupid "babe" that people laugh at usually - but a wonderful warm mother, her father, another deliciously evil villain character complicated by the fact that he is her father, and he does love her, albeit in his twisted way. And the others - snotty rich kids, Mike the painter and the kids in the new school. And Sam and Lily. Beauty Cookson: Main character; though timid little girl, she has a sweet personality and adores rabbits and the kids show called "Rabbit Hutch" starring Sam and his rabbit Lily. Beauty was an interesting, three-dimensional character; a smart, quiet girl who enjoys art and a children's show called 'The Rabbit Hutch'. I liked that the show proved to be so important to the plot, as I thought at first it was just an odd little quirk of Beauty's.

Dilly Cookson: Beauty's caring mother who struggles standing up to her cruel husband, but does her best with looking after Beauty. They flee, arriving in Rabbit Cove where slowly they rebuild their lives. Mum discovers a hidden talent for baking (hence Cookie!) and Beauty finally discovers herself.Beauty, the heroine of this modern fairy tale, is virtually friendless and re-christened 'Ugly' by her school tormentors. She's also contending with an explosively angry father who delights in belittling her and her mother. The best thing about this book is that it is not just Beauty that grows as a character - her mother grows too. I feel that this is something of a rarity in children's literature and, as such, it was one of my favourite parts of the novel. Random House said in a statement that it had been in "close discussion" with Wilson about age guidance. "Jacqueline can see the arguments both for and against printed age guidance on books but does retain some reservations about the subject," the publisher added. "She has agreed for age guidance to be put on the cover of Cookie but RHCB will maintain the discussion with her and her agent over the matter and will review the situation on a book by book basis." Jacqueline Wilson wrote her first novel when she was nine years old, and she has been writing ever since. She is now one of Britain's bestselling and most beloved children's authors. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. More than forty million copies of her books have been sold. Alsie wrote: "Weird theres some by different authors in here. It's meant to be just Jacqueline wilson! Just because it's got the same illustrator, doesnt mean it's a JW book!"

Skye Wortley: A rude girl in Beauty's class who takes pleasure in bullying Beauty and calling her nasty names like "Ugly". The thing about abuse in this book is that it is subtle. The father does not think he is doing anything wrong. He thinks that Dilys and Beauty should be grateful to him for giving them so many dresses and makeup and all the luxury they live in. He thinks that they owe him to be pretty and good for him. An interesting point that I particularly noted on this reading, is that when Beauty's mother tells someone about the situation at home, saying he slapped her and twisted her wrist, and perhaps she and Beauty could get a council flat or stay in a refuge, the response is: 'Oh get a grip, Dilys! Most of those poor women in those places have been beaten to a pulp. They'd give their right arms to swap places with you...'Beauty Cookson is no beauty. She's a plain, timid girl who constantly feels inferior to the super-confident, snooty girls at school. Worse than the teasing in the playground, though, is the unpredictable, hurtful criticism from her father. Beauty and her meek, sweet mother live in uneasy fear of his fierce rages, sparked whenever they break one of his fussy house rules. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments This has to be my favourite JW of all time. It's so utterly tragic in the beginning, but Beauty's story still managed to be relatable because everyone's felt belittled even if it's just to a small degree. Of course, Dilly is my favourite mum character too. I feel like so often in JW the mum is the problem parents so to see a mother so dedicated to her daughter's happiness made me tear up so many times. Age banding has been included on Jacqueline Wilson's new book Cookie despite the former children's laureate having signed up to an online campaign against the controversial practice.
