Description

Dex and Mosscap met during the course of the first book, and now they leave the wilds and journey across the rest of Panga, the habitable moon they live on. A Prayer for the Crown-Shy is a story of kindness and love from one of the foremost practitioners of hopeful SF.

With a pervading sense of optimism and warmth, A Psalm for the Wild-Built inaugurates an exciting series from one of science fiction's brightest stars. But there’s a danger, in general, I think when we talk about utopian/aspirational settings to kind of *flatten* individual humanity into a kind of consensus of assumptions about what moral virtue is or how happiness can best be found. They wanted a cold drink and a shady spot and to not so much as glance at their ox-bike for a couple days, and while the spice blum blossoms were indeed beautiful, they did not need to stop at every single fucking tree. They pulled off the road at a simple clearing built for that exact purpose, and together, Dex and Mosscap made camp.

There were no creeping branches catching their clothing, no fallen trees posing problems, no unlabeled forks that made them stop and stare with dread. Mosscap, too, comes off as a little bit needier in this book, which can be a bit of an annoyance because it seemed to be so wise in the first book. Also on a purely personal note—because I am obsessed with robots—I was kind of hoping to meet more robots, or at least learn a little more about them … but ultimately, like all books about robots, these are books about people, and it wouldn’t ultimately make sense for the narrative and emotional arcs of the story to introduce more robots to us. The text did not flow when she said, "THEY did this and THEY did that" It sounded a bit like she was referring to someone else (who was maybe mentioned earlier?

Her first novel, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, was originally funded via Kickstarter in 2012.
