Anyone who has attempted to read the Puritans knows that the content of their books is much like their book titles—unnecessarily long.

This book really bothered me, because I so wanted to like this series, but the characters dr Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners by Dane Ortlund outlines biblical truths to help us gaze on the person and work of the Lord Jesus. In this book, Dane Ortlund points believers to Christ, making the case that sanctification does not happen by doing more or becoming better, but by going deeper into the wondrous gospel truths that washed over them when they were first united to him. To grow as a disciple of Christ is not adding Christ to your life but collapsing into Christ as your life. When I read Harry Potter or Fablehaven, I loved it because I felt like the book had an ending, but still left you wondering what would happen in the next book.

The full-size book gives pastors and other Bible teachers much more detail in a fuller treatment with which to shepherd God’s flock.

I'm sure I'll be going back to it again and again to remind myself of the lessons taught and pick up more that I missed on the first run through. And what mother loves her kids enough to take them out of the colony and then just drop him off somewhere and walk away while he's screaming for you? We need more of Jesus if we’re to find, like the subtitle says, “real change for real sinners,” rather than “surface change for theoretical sinners” (17–18). Nevertheless, in my opinion, more emphasis on true mortification would have provided a helpful balance to the overall presentation. As I was reading this book, I found myself wishing Ortlund would be more practical—I wanted action steps I could do.
