Cascadia is a puzzly tile-laying and token-drafting game featuring the habitats and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest adorned with artwork by Beth Sobel. Personally I love making the contiguous habit corridors as big as possible, but we also liked that variety of the different animal card rules. In addition, more wildlife scoring cards and habitat tiles are being added to give even more variety to keep old players involved and enough components to add a 5th and 6th player to the game.

There’s also a Family variant Wildlife Scoring Card which replaces all 5 individual animal goals with a single objective which is great for younger or less experienced gamers. In combination with an 'overpopulation' mechanism (which allows a player to replace three of the same wildlife with three random replacements) this gives you some welcome flexibility that doesn’t feel unearned. Not wishing to make this all about Calico, but the same solo “insider information” appears there too. You start with three hexagonal habitat tiles (with five types of habitat in the game), and on a turn you choose a new habitat tile that’s paired with a wildlife token, then place that tile next to your other ones and place the wildlife token on an appropriate habitat. Swap cats for wildlife and quilts for the Great Outdoors, and you’re pretty much there – though Cascadia is a little easier on the brain and therefore a tad more chilled. When you have placed your tile and token, you discard the furthest pair in the pool and then move the remaining two pairs along.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s two puzzles in one that must be navigated in conjunction, like a tandem being ridden in two separate directions.

In Cascadia, there are not many components to talk about really, what is there is very functional, beautiful and needed.

In Cascadia: Landmarks expansion, players create sprawling habitats and place beautiful natural landmarks within them. Be aware that if that if all 4 Wildlife Tokens in the pool are the same animal type, this is known as “overpopulation”. While it will not be everyone’s cup of tea, if you like tile-laying and puzzles it is definitely worth your time.If we don’t have a game you are looking for it please contact us and we will do our best to help you.
