Cayin's RU6 is a safe bet for a high-end DAC/Amp dongle with all the flexibility DAC/Amp dongles bring, an excellent foray into R-2R technology as well as into genuinely portable Hi-Fi — without breaking the bank. If you think that was challenging to pack into a pocket friendly DAP or a small modular card, imagine getting it all inside of a small usb DAC/amp dongle. balanced jack of the RU6, switched on NOS mode, and was playing music out of Roon from my desktop PC. When you want to hear organic, coherent, and unmasked sounds, switching off the oversampling feature, for me, yields the best result. Sometimes the faintest hissing was still present even with host devices without cellular antenna but it must be related to the host device power supply.

balanced cable termination, Cayin added an extra op-amp, unity gain amp identical to the primary headphone amp op-amp. By the time Cayin completed the R01 Audio Motherboard for the N6ii DAP, they noticed that the R-2R resistor ladder network could be implemented as a low power consumption DAC circuit that offers outstanding audio performance. With the midrange being quite forward and the very low end being quite shy, staging is stretched wide. The sound stage is wide, especially in depth; the layering is impressive; the separation between instruments is solid and I even find that RU-6 has 3D presentation. Both ends of the audio spectrum extend fairly and there is enough headroom to put in small bands and quartets without compromising separation between instruments.

You'll have a small interruption/pop every 10 volume steps but it isn't much of an annoyance and is normal.I must also say that I use the Ru6 with my IFI griffon and the have either the Cayin C9 or the Aroma A100 TB as the amplifier.

Adding Cayin C9 amp beefs up the bass a bit with more weight in sub-bass and mid-bass, but even without C9, it was still a great pair up.While most modern dongles use a delta-sigma DAC implementation, the RU6’s R-2R relies instead on a vast array of discreet components to perform digital-to-analog conversion, in the form of 96 pieces of resistors at 48 per channel with precisely matching parameters.

Bass could have benefitted from a little boost, but overall, the bass has a deep extension, nice fast punch, mids have more neutral lower mids, clear detailed upper mids and vocals, and detailed crunchy treble with a nice airy sparkle. The Cayin RU6 comes with good amplification traits and doesn't depend on the source for volume control. At the top of the device there are the two headphone outputs and at the bottom lies the USB type C socket. As a result, OS mode offers better measurable performance, however, it can be argued that the purer signal provided by NOS mode introduces fewer artefacts, phase distortion and jitter. Unfortunately the possible hissing due to EMI interference would not allow for the full rating and is forcing a half star deduction. Timbre is utterly natural and so close to reality that in the end you forget about the technicalities as you are immensely drawn to the music, song after song as the time passes by without noticing.
