Description

Discover the origins of Christianity in Ireland and journey with the Irish monks as they embark on their great adventure through France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Thoughts, prayers and readings for every day of the year, both morning and evening, with Celtic themes and inspiration, from the Northumbria Community.

In the Introduction, Carmichael recounts with great warmth and evident pleasure the hospitality which he received from the people whose songs and stories he was anxious to record "I have three regrets -" he says, "that I had not been earlier collecting, that I have not been more diligent in collecting, and that I am not better qualified to treat what I have collected. The format is traditional: Bible passage (helpfully included in full), followed by articulate and warm commentary. Anyone who has traveled to the Island of Lindisfarne will know the gift of such "thin places", where the wonder and glory of heaven radiates into our ordinary lives. For this reason it is short, and can be prayed in the time it takes to boil a kettle, especially if committed to memory. In them we hear an echo of our own experience of exile, our yearning for authenticity, our desire to embrace truth in whatever unlikely place we find it, and our willingness to live with more questions than answers. Our lives are usually too full of noise, so this is the ideal moment of the day to experience real silence. The main part of the book consists of thoughts, prayers and readings for the morning and the evening of every day of the year, as well as liturgies for both normal and special occasions. Sung and spoken versions of Morning, Midday and Evening Prayer; and Complines for each day of the week.

Many of us are realizing that this rich tradition guarded by our (mostly) Catholic brothers and sisters has a very vibrant place in modern Christian spirituality. Having the words of various carols within this book meant that I slowed down to really read the words. Others have eloquently reviewed and summarized the contents, but you really ought to read and taste the silken words yourself. The disruption of change, the mid-life doldrums and the bitter-sweetness of old age are given voice. At Nether Springs, the mother house of the Community, the Office is said or sung at set times in the chapel; when Companions in the Community meet together, saying the Office can be a routine part of the meeting; and individuals and families can use it in their homes as part of daily life. Although there are a few good modern Christmas songs, lots of the familiar carols carry such beautiful truth filled messages. However, if you wish to make any adaptations to the wording of our Daily Office, to the arrangement of the stanzas, or if you intend to insert any additional material within our Daily Office, please contact us to discuss your proposal further and seek permission for the adaptation. Poems, psalms, scriptures, meditations, with all that variety and so much spiritual depth, I never tire of it. The selected slips may be placed where they can be seen from time to time during the day, or carried around, as a reminder for continued prayer.
