Although I did enjoy these sequences, they go on for just a tad too long and perhaps another edit would have moved the story on at a slightly speedier pace. man, it had to be rough being ready to cry with every sentence, but not being allowed to because the main character can overcome anything except when she couldn't, but really she's tough as nails, wipes tear, because she can't handle anything. Dead Silence feels like a great book for sci-fi readers that are intimidated by endless worldbuilding, as you get just enough to the setting to make the world feel real while also being able to follow the story easily. Dead Silence” is included on the Goodreads lists “Space Horror”, and “2022 Horror and Sci Fi Releases”. Can’t think of anything off the top of my head right now, but If you browse my horror shelf on Goodreads, maybe something will pop up!

His work has been published in five languages, optioned for film, and praised by authors as diverse as Roxane Gay, David Joy, Jerry Stahl, and Meg Gardiner. Even negative characters that can often cause a disconnect from the story did quite the opposite, adding depth to the story because of how well they were created. This novel felt like it was just a mash-up of other horror movies/novels hoping to combine them to deliver a winner and it was nowhere near that in any way, shape, or form. Little beats the plot of space travel gone wrong due to an unknown enemy and a preceding crew that disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Barnes plays nicely on human fears of both madness and of ghosts, carefully blurring the line between science fiction and horror. A Most-Anticipated Title in Bustle, i09 , LitHub, PopSugar , CrimeReads, BookRiot , GoodReads and more.

I jumped for this ARC because sci-fi horror = yes, and because this is by the same author who wrote The Ghost and the Goth series! I had the definite impression that the rest of the crew isn't exactly 100% mentally healthy either, but I'm not sure this is developed as well as it could be.

When they catch the signal for a distress beacon for Aurora, a long-lost luxury liner, they decide to investigate. i got an ARC of this book back in august 2021, put off reading it until spooktober 2021, and even though i was so excited to be, as this bookmark declares, one of the first readers of this book, and even though the pub date got moved a whole month back, here i sit on delayed-pub-date-eve and i still haven't reviewed it. I wanted to like this book but the annoying lead character, semi-annoying narrator and other issues blocked my enjoyment of this sci-fi movie mash up. The novel follows Claire, a team leader who worked aboard a Verux repair ship servicing communication beacons in the outermost regions of explored space alongside her crewmates Voller, Kane, Lourdes, and Nysus.

However, there is also a dash of humor and a blossoming love, both of which work to balance out the constant sense of dread and impending doom as well as the presence of bloody ghosts, including some from each crew member’s own past. to be fair, it's a pretty exciting opportunity: the discovery of The Aurora; a luxury spacecraft that went missing on its maiden voyage twenty years ago carrying hundreds of passengers—the rich, the famous, and the infamous—whose disappearance became the stuff of legend, speculation, a bermuda-triangle-grade mysteeeeerious phenomenon, and here it is—the chance to make history, solve the mystery, or—for the less noble crew members—fill their pockets with bling. The fact that my spouse and I are going to be buddy reading this off your review just fills my heart so, so much! And even if the antagonist’s ultimate unmasking came as no shock, the fight for survival was enough to keep eyes glued to the page for the duration. it's a locked-room mystery set in a haunted house in outer space, and it's intense, wonderful, surprising, disorienting—there are so many different levels of unreliability to this thing and it is an absolute thrill trying to excavate the truth from claire's slippery heap of memories distorted by hallucination, damage, amnesia, lies, self-preservation, and trauma, and even though i waited a long time to sing its praises, i am singing them as loudly as i can to make up for it.
