As the story continues, the battle between Light and L intensifies as the viewer tries to figure out what will happen: will Light be caught, or will he be able to discover L’s real name and put in the Death Note?

As to whether I want him to succeed, shockingly for myself there is a big part of me that says: “yes”.Light Yagami is a genius high school student who is about to learn about life through a book of death. It’s just a still image and a burst of music, where TV stations usually list the local sponsors for the series. But if you’re a fan of anime, and you have never seen Death Note before, you must watch this series.

Of course my preference as always is for the original language track, and there were no problems here either. You sympathise with his cause, because his cause is ultimately to make the world a better place by getting rid of people who are awful, even though the thing he is doing is awful too. Death Note looks fantastic, the line art is smooth, the detail levels are as good as you can hope to get from an upscale, without significant artificial filtering or sharpening, and there is no compression visible at all. The episodes have the Japanese credit sequences, and there are no translated credit reels, or credit screens. If there is any problem with it, it is there could be another Death Note related murder: in the form of a Hollywood adaptation of the series next year, with Nat Wolff playing the role of a character named “Light Turner”.

Of course with so many mysterious deaths taking place it’s not long before the police, and in turn a special investigation unit, begin to take notice and it’s here where the series begins to take it’s most ‘interesting’ twist. If Death Note succeeds in at least one thing, it is that it has possibly created the most interesting and intriguing character of all anime. widescreen 1080p format, and given the vividness, the rich and lush life to the colour palette, they must have gone back to the source material rather than the DVD masters. As I had just seen the series in its entirety, I chose not to watch the digest movies, other than to check that they were there, with the same specifications as the series (except the lack of a signs only track).

Death Note brings a compelling and unique experience anime and it also remains relatively faithful to the original source material and adapts it quite well; something which should also please fans as it has done for nearly a decade.Of course; seeing as Death Note is nearly ten years old it’s with no surprise that many of the UK population has already seen it (if you haven’t where have you been? During the golden-age of anime there were numerous franchises that broke the ‘boundary’ that had been pre-determined by people and became more main-stream with the general public.

Also catch three hours of bonus content, including interviews with the Japanese creators, behind-the-scenes footage with the English and Japanese voice casts, production art, audio commentary and much more! Products labelled '*item fulfilled by Exertis on behalf of hmv' will be supplied to you directly by Exertis via their approved couriers. Other notable differences is that colours in some scenes (like those in the first comparison) actually reflect the original colour; such as Green looking green (as opposed to a washed out green) and Blacks looking black (as opposed to a blue colour). Being a Shinigami isn’t all that it used to be, and his peers just spend eternity sitting around gambling or sleeping. If this is the first then that would be great, but I doubt it will, and what I suspect will happen is that more American parents will panic about their kids being corrupted. Instead we are treated to the two OVA films – which re tell the events of the anime series with newly drawn animation.
