Description

It's a game I clearly remember playing as a child, albeit a relatively small 'toy' version of the type with a pull string to reset all the pins, and most people of a certain age, even if not familiar with the more regional pub games, will instantly recognise a Devils table when they see one. The table shown here is a vintage Oak example, purchased in a rather shabby state from an Antiques centre in Lincolnshire.

This distinctive game appeared in the 1700's and was cleverly miniaturised so that no throwing strip was required at all - the pins stand on a table and are knocked down by a ball which is swung around a pole.Although it is now extinct, there was one more minor variant of the game played further North, in decades past.

Devil among the tailors is a form of table skittles which is usually found as a pub game in England. The latter name came about in the year 1783 during which the Theatre Royal, Haymarket ran a play that, for some reason, offended the tailoring profession so much that a group of tailors and theatre-goers rioted at the theatre one day. Perhaps the most innovative and exciting aspect of this project is that with Benchmark’s help, AHEC has documented all elements of the manufacturing process and will be putting this together with life cycle data recently collected from the American hardwood industry to produce a full ‘cradle-to-grave’ life cycle impact report for the tables. Amongst the ingenious features are work surfaces that can be closed and locked, a foot rest, and office organizers that transform to enable an impromptu game of ‘Devil amongst the Tailors’. This table has seen a fair bit of afternoon skittling action in my local pub, The George at Ashley in Northamptonshire, but has now been sold.
