Insufficient guidance for people with certain health issues: The book touches on various health concerns like nut allergies, irritable bowel disease, high cholesterol, and diabetes, but it does not offer practical advice on how to address these issues through dietary changes. Occasionally there will be mentions of his ZOE PREDICT study (which after reading the book I am still not entirely clear on the premise of the study or what "ideal" results might look like) and how his own results have influenced his personal food choices, which is great for him but I am not clear on how those same foods would or should influence my own choices as my body might react differently (I am a woman in my 40's not, like him, a man in my 60's: we have vastly different nutritional needs).

Food For Life’ suggests that eating minimally processed plant-based foods is the best for our health. By feeding our children fake foods from birth – from ultra-processed formula milk to readymade purée pouches, to white processed bread, croissants, UP veggie sticks, sugar-laden fromage frais, chips and chicken nuggets, all washed down with fruit juice, flavoured milk or even soda – we are omitting the key building blocks for their bodies and brains. For further information about your statutory rights, contact your local authority Trading Standards department or consumer advice center (for example the Citizen's Advice Bureau if you are in the UK). Investigating everything from environmental impact and food fraud to allergies, ultra-processed food and deceptive labelling, Spector also shows us the many wondrous and surprising properties of everyday foods, which scientists are only just beginning to understand.Ich lese gerne über Ernährung und habe mich nur mit Mühe durchgequält, weil der Autor theoretisch einen guten Ruf genießt. This paper shows the optimal amount of whole grains, refined grains, vegetables, fruit, nuts, legumes, eggs, dairy and fish per day. Most people have too much omega-6, which can increase inflammation and disease, and not enough omega-3.

I have to admit that this book has singlehandedly made me change my eating habits to include more plants. Using identical twins, Tim Spector shows how even real-life “clones” with the same upbringing turn out to be very different. You can reheat rice; unopened mussels won’t kill you; and eating meat doesn’t give you cancer (though “replacing 30% of traditional burger meat with mushrooms or fungi would be the equivalent of taking 2m cars off the road”).Spector also reveals the fascinating and surprising qualities of everyday foods that scientists are just starting to understand. Also the 2022 paper "Estimating impact of food choices on life expectancy: A modeling study" is well worth looking at. Generally the advice is 1) eat minimally processed foods; 2) eat a wide variety of those foods; and 3) as rule Western people eat way more meat than they need so cutting down on that is good for you and the planet.

More recently the paper “The influence of dietary and supplemental omega-3 fatty acids on the omega-3 index: A scoping review” suggests 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams of EPA plus DHA as triglycerides (e. Examples of such foods include cheese, yoghurt, fermented tofu, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, and kimchi. The book describes our physiological relationship with food to dispel many prevalent myths and pseudo-science surrounding faddish diets. It aims to think about food for “our individual health, the health of our society and the health of our planet”.I find his repeated advice that the effects of food on the body differ for everyone to be one that makes a lot of sense, and wish that the average person had access to tools that could measure their own responses to food. The key to a balanced gut microbiome is a diverse range of whole plant foods and small amounts of fermented foods. Tim Spector has pioneered a science-based approach to nutrition, encouraging us to forget misleading notions of calorie counts or nutritional breakdowns.
