I want to be a diplomat, and travel, and do all sorts of things that have nothing to do with being disabled. I finally broke down and asked for it after a semester spent squinting at HONY art through the lens of Google Images in the back of my ninth grade journalism class. But, rather than pithy quotes or even harrowing anecdotes, the accompanying writing was deep and skillfully rendered reportage, connected chiefly by implication to the pictures Riis had taken.

In January 2015, Stanton photographed and interviewed a 14-year-old boy from Brownsville, Brooklyn, Vidal Chastanet, who said his greatest influence was his school principal at Mott Hall Bridges Academy, Nadia Lopez. We understand each entry as something snatched from right here, from someplace culturally adjacent, if not identical, to the watcher’s world; there’s a sense (and, given Stanton’s apparent tirelessness, a corresponding reality) that this could just as easily be you, today, beaming out from the open windowpane of someone else’s news feed. Brandon Stanton will take you on an extraordinary journey through the photos of the people living in New York.

But it's Stanton's interviews with his subjects, usually excerpted from their rawest moments, that are the most captivating as they highlight both the hardship and the little victories of an often-unforgiving city. The result of these efforts was Humans of New York, a vibrant blog in which he featured his photos alongside quotes and anecdotes. As of March 2015 [update], the book had been on The New York Times Best Seller list for 31 weeks and was the number one Non-Fiction Best Seller for a week in 2013 and again in 2014.Giving his reasoning, he said "I think what is helpful are these doses and reminders of normal life, normal happiness, normal joys, normal love. In May 2016, Stanton shared a series of interviews with pediatric cancer patients at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Ranging from whimsical to heartbreaking, these stories have attracted a global following of more than 30 million people across several social media platforms. Thank you for every time you’ve said hello to me on the street, and told me how much the blog means to you. Coates refers repeatedly to whites’ insistence on their exclusive racial identity; he realizes now “that nothing so essentialist as race” divides people, but rather “the actual injury done by people intent on naming us, intent on believing that what they have named matters more than anything we could ever actually do.

Instead, the collision of photograph and paragraph requires a constant movement between broad themes and searing details, between sentiment and cold fact. In an article, written by Brand Stanton in The Huffington Post discuss his past life explaining, “Instead of updating my resume and looking for a similar job, I decided to forget about money and have a go at something I truly enjoyed. The following spread below exposes fierce humans on the verge to conquer greatness and linked to various modes of transportation. The author’s empathy undoubtedly made him an exceptional doctor, and the precision of his prose—as well as the moral purpose underscoring it—suggests that he could have written a good book on any subject he chose. He concluded the section on Pakistan by highlighting Syeda Ghulam Fatima, the leader of the Bonded Labour Liberation Front, an organisation that works to free bonded labourers that were victims of predatory lending practices.
