We're now two years into the next generation of consoles and rather than taking a needed step forward, NHL has its skates planted firmly in the past. Plus, the choppy commentary, inconsistent tone, and repetitive cut aways during stoppages make it harder to become immersed in the hockey than it’s been at the series’ peaks. These receive tuning updates this year, along with fresh abilities in the mix, but amid hockey’s frantic pace their viability rarely seems obvious mid-play. That doesn’t sound extravagant, yet seeing an overhead scoreboard reflect on the playing surface during a period’s opening moments is gorgeous. NHL 23 features new X-Factors like Trevor Zegras' "Skilled Up", Sarah Nurse's "Relentless", and AI upgrades that help AI-controlled players utilise their X-Factors for more impactful and realistic contributions on the ice.

Unlike last year, NHL 23 actually makes use of the hardware power provided by the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and ice looks like ice.
