Fly Me Home is an incredibly moving portrait of one family's struggle to adjust to life in a new country. I love the fact that she doesn't shy away from difficult topics and knows that children want to be told the truth, although it doesn't hurt to add a little sprinkle of magic to the mix! She builds this magical realism into her stories which I love in other authors too (Almond and Murakami, for example). Praise for Boy in the Tower'An unusual and very impressive debut' The Bookseller'I loved it' BookbagPraise for Where Monsters Lie'One of the most unusual and distinctive new voices in children's fiction' The Bookseller Feeling lost and alone in a strange new city, Leelu wishes she could fly away back home her real home where her dad is, thousands of miles away.

Leelu’s situation – of arriving in London, with her mother and brother, from another country but without her father – was based on a child I used to teach. Ho-Yen is adept at choosing protagonists who are outsiders or with issues that make them stand out, connecting with readers. I would give this book five stars and I would recommend it to anybody who loves action and sometimes a little bit of humour. At the heart of this is a charming friendship between two immigrant children, perhaps my favourite aspect of the book.Carl argued the insurer's insistence on a written report was unreasonable as the doctor's view was that it was in his best interests to be repatriated. As an adult it bothers me when authors avoid naming countries, but I suspect I would have appreciated it at the age of the intended audience. A story of learning to fit in, of family, Leelu's story is sad and uplifting, and a rather unusual look at immigration from the point of view of a young girl living through it. The Vocabu-Library resource from Vocabulary Ninja is a comprehensive vocabulary resource designed to unpick and explain the vocabulary found within classic and modern children’s literature.

The evidence of the treating doctor is usually very persuasive because the doctor is generally best placed to assess their patient's situation. Every single character in this book, good or bad or in between, is superbly written and I loved Leelu and her brother Tiber, who also faces some issues when arriving in England, especially. Mirabelle says “It’s amazed me at how much I can relate to the book with starting a new school in a new place. Although he’d received a partial refund of his travel insurance premiums, his insurer wouldn’t refund the extra "add-on" cover he’d bought because he'd been going on a cruise. This resources will encourage and support pupils to explore unknown vocabulary, classify tiered vocabulary independently, explore the wider application of newly acquired vocabulary and enhance classroom vocabulary display which ultimately leads to improved retention.

But Leelu is not alone; someone is leaving her gifts outside her house - wonders which give her curious magical powers. Throw in some magic and some issues with an older brother finding his own difficult way through the upheaval and you have a very satisfying, thoughtful read for 9-12 year olds. Some excitement with Leelu's elder brother will keep KS3 readers interested and it makes the story relevant and accessible to a wider readership. Fly Me Home is an incredibly moving portrait of one family’s struggle to adjust to life in a new country.

Her first novel, Boy in the Tower, published in July 2014 by Random House Children's Publishers, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.

Not knowing why they had to leave and why her father was left behind, I looked hard for clues in the story.

I don’t think cities are fundamentally lonely places but I am interested about our relationship with place, space and nature and thinking about how another person in my city might live.
