About this deal

I could see what the author/artist was trying to accomplish, but somehow I didn't find the narrative as poignant or eloquent as some others.

This beautiful, colourful and imaginative book is all about the relationship between Syd and his grandad, and creating a metaphor for his passing. The New York Times Book Review 'The creator of The Storm Whale (2014) offers another thoughtful picture book guaranteed to spark discussion. Num momento tão dramático como aquele em que atravessamos, em que tantas crianças se veem impedidas de despedir daqueles que partem, este livro pode ser uma forma de abordar o assunto com os mais novos. A heartfelt story which quietly and sensitively explores the the experience of grief through simple storytelling and beautiful artwork.

There is some real sweetness here too, like the ending where a photo gets delivered of the grandfather living it up on the island - gets across that message that even though someone is gone they might be ok. Vemos o quanto pode custar estarmos longe de quem, antes, estava connosco sempre e nos mostrava as curiosidades mais engraçadas sempre com um sorriso terno. Benji studied animation at university and has since worked on a diverse array of projects, from picture books and animated short films to music videos, commercials and title sequences.

Still, there's nothing really wrong with this one, and it might be helpful for some, as an exploration of these issues. Each page is worthy of time and discussion as they lead us to understand the changing emotions that accompany the final adventure Grandad and Syd have together. A lovely story about the relationship between Syd and his Grandad and their adventure to a fantastical island. I think this shows that it could simply be taken as an interesting story for younger readers but also it has layers! As a child, Benji knew that when he grew up he either wanted to make films or draw pictures in books.Someone dying is definitely a difficult subject to tackle but I have to applaud Davies for doing it so subtly and in all honestly, in such a clever way that this story can really help your little one understand a hard subject. Sure to provide comfort to young children struggling to understand loss, Benji Davies's tale is a sensitive and beautiful reminder that our loved ones live on in our memories long after they're gone. The metaphor is not very explicit which means the book could simply be used as a nice read-aloud story for younger readers or explored more deeply with older children. The sentiment in this book is beautiful as it so sensitively deals with the loss of a much loved Grandad.

Whether it's read as a picture book about love, loss or just missing someone who isn't around anymore, it's a charmer. A very thought-provoking book which could be used to expand KS2 students thinking regarding the realism of the story and coping with grief.A heart-warming adventure tale, this picture book sees a young boy and his Grandad take to the skies to rescue the stranded astronauts spotted through their telescope. A touching and comforting book that could be used to deal with the loss of a grandparent, as well as a good every day read. Some children may be happy with the fact that Grandad has stayed on the island and is having a nice time while others may be able to use the book to help them cope with their own experiences of loss. I understood there to be an underlying metaphor of death and a beautiful underlying message about our loved ones and no matter how far they are, love will never be lost.
