About this deal

John Innes Seed Compost also contains sand for excellent drainage as well as coir and loam for perfect nutrient and moisture retention. John Innes composts are made by a number of different compost brands, and are ideal for long-term plant growth in pots and containers. This good absorption and release of water and nutrients is sometimes referred to as having a high level of “buffering”. Maybe more importantly if you don't use good seed compost and your seeds fail to germinate, you will lose valuable weeks of growth. The loam also contains micro-elements and organic matter, which provides a slow release of Nitrogen to the plant.

However, many compost manufacturers are members of the John Innes Manufacturers’ Association whose aim it is to provide reliable John Innes potting media that will support good plant growth even though not all ingredients match the original specification. The sphagnum moss peat in John Innes compost improves both the aeration and water-retaining capacity, which enables the compost to make maximum use of the nutrients and trace elements in fertilisers. All of the John Innes products, simply offer a different level of nutrients to boost initial growth all the way until the final result. There's also John Innes compost for seed and cuttings, as well as an ericaceous compost which is lime-free and suitable for acid-loving (lime-hating) plants including blueberry, rhododendron, azalea, camellia, and pieris. These numbers refer to the varying levels of fertilizer included in the mix, to suit different uses.If you want to share your opinion about our service, positive or negative, you can contact us directly.

Stem cuttings need to be in a moist environment out of direct sunlight until they have rooted so either place in a cold frame, a covered propagator or cover with polythene, using supports to prevent the polythene from touching the cuttings. The low level of fertiliser makes this ideally suited for potting of sensitive species or initial potting of seedlings or rooted cuttings. It is used for pricking out or potting-up young seedlings or rooted cuttings and short-term potting such as for bedding plants or vegetable transplants which will subsequently be planted out. The same basic formula as John Innes No1, but with an increased fertiliser level for potting on established plants. The loam supplies the nutrition needed for the base of the plant, which helps to absorb and release plant nutrients as required. It contains a low, carefully balanced amount of fertilizer to give enough for growth but avoid scorching the delicate young roots. John Innes composts were developed over 50 years ago and are based on a traditional recipe of sterilised loam, peat and horticultural grit with added nutrients.
