One thing that distinguished Chandler's hero Philip Marlowe even from his other hardboiled peers is that Marlowe often doesn't apprehend the criminal or explain every plot point at the end of the novel. As commissioning fiction editor on the magazine, I love sharing my reading experience of the latest books, debut authors and more with you all, and would like to hear from you about your favourite books and authors! The heroine, who is willing to sacrifice herself and whom Marlowe ultimately rescues, is the jaded Hollywood starlet, Mavis Weld.

You do not have to read the others to enjoy this one, but I recommend doing so since they are excellent books and provide some interesting background on the main character. Little Sister starts as it means to go on with an intriguing but incredibly disconcerting prologue which sets the tone for the entire book. The relationship between sisters is always a fascinating dynamic to me and Emily and Jess definitely have a tangled past. Karen's Kittycat Club: Karen creates a cat club and invites two friends, Hannie and Amanda, to join. This affectionate portrait of family life is the story of a naughty three-year-old sister who is obstinate, inquisitive and full of mischief.

It has at its heart the relationship between sisters Emily and Jess who have been estranged for the past sixteen years. I try my best to answer them all, but I’m sure I must come across as guilty in some way, because I can’t quite seize all the details, and even in my confused state I can see how some of the gaps seem oddly placed. The slow burning build up of tension was beautifully crafted from the start and I was completely gripped, desperate to turn the pages to solve the mystery hidden within them but not wanting it to finish.

Exploring the darker side of sibling rivalry, Isabel Ashdown, her writing as perfect as ever, skilfully unpicks this tangled web of mistrust to give us a story that grips hard from the start. Many thanks to her, Netgalley and Kensington books for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion of this book.

The parents come back after their night out to find Daisy missing and that Jess has suffered one of her “episodes” or “fainting thing” – a medical condition that means she can pass out at the drop of a hat. Marlowe realises that he cannot touch Dolores without destroying Mavis and her career and leaves, only to see Lagardie heading up to her room.

I quickly engaged with the dynamics of the investigating team, the humour of DS Domnall O’Malley lightened the tone. As in all of Chandler's novels, one of the major themes in The Little Sister is the love/hate relationship that Chandler had with Los Angeles and Hollywood. New information about this family’s relationship is constantly emerging and I found the pace a bit too slow in places, and this was likely a result of the suspense. Colman tells her class that they are going to adopt a grandparent, she adopts a grandmother and now has five. At some point in the life of every single human being who walks this Earth, they will construct a lie, whether large or small.Little Sister gripped me from the very first page and held me in it's grasp throughout the entire book. All Is going well between the sisters until one fateful night when Emily and her husband James go to a party leaving Jess babysitting their baby daughter Daisy. I didn't mind knowing what happened to Daisy before the end of the book, I found that it worked for this story. The only problem is, Keely has made these allegations before, and they’ve been investigated and proven untrue.
