That’s how the diameter and circumference (circ – equals distance rolled in one turn of the wheel) are calculated in the Tyre size table. These figures are useful for setting your cycle-computer and precisely calculating gears. The current Schwalbe sizes and markings are given in bold. We have tried to list in addition all tire sizes which are currently used on the market or which were used in the past. These classical fractional size indications are also often engraved on old Schwalbe tires. Sometimes, you still find them on current models which have already been available for quite a long time.

French size markings (e.g. 700 x 35C) give the approximate tire outer diameter (700 mm) and width (35 mm). The letter at the end indicates the inner diameter of the tire. In this case, C stands for 622 mm. French size markings are not used for all tire sizes, so, for example, it is not used for MTB sizes. Valve extenders come in a range of sizes, types and even colours. These ones simply screw over the top of an open Presta valve, but you can also get ones that allow you to place the valve core at the top. Inner tubes are simple but essential – unless you’re riding with tubeless tyres, you’ll always need an inner tube. Carrying spares is always a good idea, even if you are running tubeless, as a large slash or hole will not seal easily.

If you have carbon rims on a bike with rim brakes, you also need to be careful not to drag your brakes on long descents because overheating can cause latex tubes to fail. Some wheel makers recommend against using latex tubes with their rims. That’s one of the reasons why you’ll see the “c” in some metric tire codes. It’s a hangover from the old French system which categorized tire widths from “a” narrowest to “d” widest. For some reason manufacturers still include this on the tires. Another reason not to exceed the 2.2 limit on road is that a more bulbous tyre can deflect side ways with a noticeable effect on control and road holding. Conversely, fitting a tyre of less than 1.4 times the rim section will result in a harsh ride and more rolling drag than a larger tyre at the same pressure. It should be easy: buy exactly the same model of tyre as those already on the bike. Of course, this isn’t much help if identical tyres aren’t readily available, if you fancy something different or if you’re looking for replacements in unusual and hard-to-find sizes. If you crouch down by the side of one of your bike wheels and take a look at the sidewall you’ll be able to get all the information you need – simple as that. If your wheels are even deeper than the longest valve you can find, you can buy valve extenders to add length to your valve. There’s a range of lengths available: Zipp for example makes extenders from 27mm up to 98mm long. Sometimes you can’t find any ISO size on a tyre, only the old-school markings. Although they’re familiar they can be confusing. Tyres of the same size may come with lots of different markings: 28×1¼×15/8, 28×1¾×1¼ or 700×32C, for example, which are all 32-622.
