Red Is Heroic: Beth is the middle-born daughter who wears dark red clothes, and the story is narrated from her perspective. Discover a terrifying world in the woods in this collection of five hauntingly beautiful graphic stories that includes the online webcomic sensation “His Face All Red,” in print for the first time. E mily Carroll's Through the Woods mesmerizes and inspires; a Victorian gothic playground haunted by Mary Shelley & Edward Gorey, awash in the dream-like haze of Odilon Redon, and composed with the poetic elegance of Ukiyo-e. I loved it."--Craig Thompson, three-time Eisner Award-winning author of BLANKETS More Teeth than the Osmond Family: As a girl, Bell's mother would tell her stories of such monsters. Bell never believed them.

Monster Is a Mommy: "Rebecca" is actually a mass of worms inside Rebecca's stolen skin and wants Bell's skin for her children, so they can leave their spawning pool. Bell seizes on this and saves herself by horrifying the monster with stories of the dangers its children would face in the city.My Friend Janna follows two unlikely best friends; Janna is a medium, while the narrator of the tale helps Jana swindle the bereaved who come to her for answers from beyond the grave. Although this is, in my opinion, the weakest of the five stories, it’s still an effective supernatural ghost tale with an interesting twist of an ending.

Through the Woods is an uncanny wonder. This haunting collection of visual stories, part Stephen King and part Edgar Allen Poe, is a special kind of quiet horror."--John Hendrix, winner of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles Best of Show Award.A Lady’s Hands are Cold, my second favorite of the five stories, is a Bluebeard type of retelling, with the ghost of a murdered woman wailing for vengeance from within the walls of her home. The most effective thing about this story, severed body parts aside, is the fact that the eponymous lady with the cold hands is neither fair nor understanding of her husband’s new wife and her plight. Rather, this ghost is cruel, filled with rage, and will have her revenge. (For Gaiman fans, of all the collected stories in the book, this is easily the most Gaiman-esque.) Karmic Death: It's heavily implied that the husband murdered his first wife to have her wealth and mansion all to himself. He eventually dies a gruesome death at the hands of his first wife after his second wife reassembles her dismembered corpse, the first wife having become violently possessive of the husband after death. In His Face All Red, a man grapples with his jealousy of his charismatic brother – a brother this man knows cannot be alive. When you finally learn the meaning of the title of this particular story, it’s a wonderful – terrible! – realization.
