Then I began the weathering. I recess shaded the entire model with agrax earthshade, then drybrushed the entire model with a bone color, avoiding the grey areas. You can highlight colors with a bone highlight, but it’s difficult for the white. Commonly known as the Imperial Guard, the Astra Militarum are the Imperium’s standing army of regular old humans. Making up the vast majority of the Imperium’s military forces, Guard soldiers are the first line of defense against the threats to the Imperium. Every world in the Imperium has its own force of guard, and soldiers in the Guard are drawn from worlds across the galaxy and stationed in locations of strategic or cultural importance. On the ground, the Astra Militarum’s infantry forces are supported by legions of heavy tanks and artillery and in the air, they’re supported by the Imperial Navy. While the Adeptus Astartes are the Emperor’s Angels of Death, making surgical strikes and taking out key targets, the Guard are the Emperor’s Hammer, acting as the full armored might of the Imperium.

There are currently 60 paints in the range which have been designed to colour as much of a spread of the colour spectrum as possible. The purple was straight up just Naggaroth, as mixing in yellow/white came later in the layering stage. This gives you a lot of freedom to experiment! You can go for the plain, empty wasteland style, or use scrub bushes and trees, and a wide range of colours. Below are a number of techniques our authors use to create their own desert bases – you can try using them, or take them as inspiration for your own. For this scheme, I was inspired by Miniac’s video on color theory, in which he discussed a way to use yellow and purple on what just happened to be a skeleton. I found the idea interesting, and wanted to challenge myself to do something based on this by limiting myself to 2* colors, with a few extras for various accents and a metallic. The basic idea is to use these paints and mix them into one another to help blend along the colors themselves, while also creating that distinct, contrasting tone that would make the models stand out. As far as the global hobby community is concerned, Duncan is a man with a nigh-untouchable legacy, whose efforts, whose creativity, and whose genius has inspired thousands. To say high standard are, therefore, expected would likely be an understatement. So, how do Duncan’s Two Thin Coats Paints (which were created in partnership with trans Atlantis Games and Duncan’s Painting Academy heavy Roger Yates) measure up? Duncan Rhodes Two Thin Coats Paints Review – DesignStep 7- This last step is a wash of Druchii Violet in the deepest recesses- between upper and lower teeth, between long bones and feet, hands, middle of recesses between radius and ulna, tibia and fibula. Within those 60 paints are 6 matt-finish washes and 6 metallic paints – 3 golds and 3 silvers (though one of the golds is a colour match to Citadel’s Balthazar Gold which is quite bronzy in colour). The other 48 colours are a mix of primary and secondary colours, all of which have been designed to be used as base layers and highlights with each other in the form of “triads” of ascending colour. For the bases, I glued sand down, painted it brown with Vallejo Brown Earth and drybrushed with Army Painter Mummy Robes. I used blue and dark grass from Gamers Grass to decorate their bases. Thin layers of Basalt Grey were used to blend the shadows and highlights, smoothing the transitions.

Kabalite Green: Kabalite Green is a vibrant, deep green shade that is perfect for adding a pop of color to your miniatures. When paired with Zandri Dust, it creates a convincing, weathered metallic finish that is evocative of corroded copper or brass. Tyler: I’m a big fan of the new Kruleboyz orruks. They present an interesting new take on greenskins, from the way they armour themselves to their anatomy. Step 3 (Left)- Using Ushabti Bone, create a wide highlight area. This will cover all the upward facing areas where light would hit, leaving the Zandri Dust showing at the downward facing angles and next to the Mahogany. If you’re wanting to apply an all-over wash like I did above, ensure you thin the paint accordingly. Otherwise, you’ll need to make sure you drop the wash into the recesses you want darkened and keep it well away from any other textures.
