About this deal

Now with Coppola’s new preferred cut Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, The Godfather Part III does gain some semblance of redemption and actually fits a little better within the greater story established by the first two films. For starters, the editing is far less clunky. Before this review, I’d only ever seen the 1991 Director’s Cut and I always felt like the edits were uncomfortably abrupt as each scene just smashed into the next. With this new version, the rearrangement of specific scenes at the outset and some of the later segments in Sicily feel more organic and natural and actually has a richer dramatic flow. A little tighter editing around some of the more stilted line reads feels more even-handed and actually helps the weaker performances in the film.

The Corleone family isn’t in danger of losing their ill-gotten wealth as Michael takes over. Rather, they don’t pull in what they used to. It’s about numbers – the whole country is. “I believe in America” isn’t effusive praise, but a belief that anyone can make the nation work for themselves, no matter who they take down to get there. In that respect, Godfather is immeasurably haunting. It goes to show that belated sequels are nothing new; it took 16 years for The Godfather Part III to come to theatres and a further 27 for the Coda cut Alien 3, Alien Resurrection – TBD 2024 (4K release possible in 2024 linked to the FX debut of the in-development Noah Hawley TV series) – N4KParamount tossed in some new bonus features, along with codes for digital copies of the films, but before I get to that, let’s take a look at the movies in this collection. In what is undeniably one of the best sequels ever made, Francis Ford Coppola continues his epic Godfather trilogy with this saga of two generations of power within the Corleone family. Coppola, working once again with the author Mario Puzo, crafts two interwoven stories that work as both prequel and sequel to the original. One shows the humble Sicilian beginnings and New York rise of a young Don Vito, now played in an Oscar®-winning* performance for Best Supporting Actor by Robert De Niro. The other shows the ascent of Michael (Al Pacino) as the new Don.

The thing I really appreciated is how these restorations are a tribute to the incredible makeup work. Vito’s aged appearance in the first film or Michael’s haggard appearance in this film stands up to scrutiny from the added resolution. One of the unfortunate downsides with the 4K format is that it can sometimes be a look behind the curtain. You can clearly spot dodgy special effects matting or even shoddy makeup work. Not for The Godfatherfilms. If anything, the added details make you appreciate the work more because it’s so convincingly lifelike you’d swear a fifty-year-old Al Pacino was well into his late 60s with a variety of health conditions. Again, film grain is beautifully retained and natural to the film without looking smoothed out. Textures in clothing and the impressive production design details of late 70s/early 80s New York to Vatican City to Sicily are on full display. The Godfather Part II – Audio: English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, English Restored 2.0 Mono Dolby Digital, Latin Spanish, French, and Japanese 5.1 Dolby Digital, and French and Japanese 2.0 Mono Dolby Digital, Subtitles: English, English for the Hearing Impaired, Danish, Latin Spanish, French, Japanese, Dutch, Norwegian, Brazilian Portuguese, Finnish, and Swedish Reassembling many of the cast members who helped make The Godfather™, Coppola has produced a movie of staggering magnitude and vision; the film received eleven Academy Awards® nominations, winning six including Best Picture of 1974.
