It was the little tidbits that I loved - like the inspiration of Stephen King’s Christine on the Batmobile, or the specific comics that informed this incarnation of Batman,” Field adds. “Having not seen Colin Farrell’s transformation into the Penguin in person, I found it particularly fascinating to learn more about the choices and physical process behind that.” At DC Fandome 2021, The Batman’sDirector Matt Reeves shared: One of the things about [ The Batman‘s] Batsuit is that it is very practical. The whole idea is that he’s made it himself. And so, we needed to be able to see how it would fit on him and all the ways he could move but also make it look like something that was still evolving. Even the idea of the story, he’s in year two so he’s been wearing it and so every night, he goes out looking for trouble. You look at his cowl and actually see there are gashes in it. All of that detail was an incredibly exciting dialogue between me and the costume designers and then having Rob involved.

The Batmobile has been a topic of much conversation since The Batman was first announced. Even before Reeves' provided a first look at the car in March, fans were speculating about what Pattinson's version of the Batmobile would like look. Many have compared it to a muscle car, including Wright. Some also feel the car's relatively simple style - at least compared to Batmobiles of the past - suggests Pattinson's Batman won't be quite as drawn to the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, the first images of the Batmobile were fairly dark, making it difficult to spot specific elements. The Art of the Batman will feature 250 full-color illustrations written by James Field, who has recently worked as a Production Liaison for both The Batman and The Flash. Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens." Eric Gagnon did the concept art for the previous game in the series, Batman: Arkham Origins (2013). Map The Batmobile] has to make an appearance out of the shadows to intimidate, so I thought of it almost like Stephen King’s Christine. I liked the idea of the car itself as a horror figure, making an animalistic appearance to really scare the hell out of the people Batman’s pursuing. There is absolutely a horror-genre aspect to this movie. Warner Bros.

Gotham was first mapped by illustrator Eliot R. Brown for the late-1990s “No Man’s Land” story arc, in which the city is cut off from the rest of the United States. Brown told Smithsonian Magazine: Joel Schumacher, who took over from Burton in Batman Forever(1995), incorporated elements of cyberpunk. Partly because the studio worried Burton’s neo- noir take on the world of Batman might scare away younger viewers. Christopher Nolan filmed Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008) in Chicago before moving to Pittsburgh and New York for The Dark Knight Rises (2012). In The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy (2012), Nolan is quoted as saying he wanted to show Gotham “as one of the great cities in the world, like London or Los Angeles or Paris.” All in all, one could surmise that Robert Pattinson’s Batman listens to My Chemical Romance as he rides through the darkness in his Batmobile. Possibly with his bangs flying in the wind. A Closer Look at The Batman‘s BatmobileIn addition, Pattinson uses a wing suit to glide off the tops of buildings. This is in contrast to the Christopher Nolan (and even Tim Burton) heroes that utlized their capes as a make shift gliding wing. Accepting the physics of all of these gliding methods, Bale and Keaton’s version would function like a hang glider. Pattinson’s, on the other hand functioned like any standard wingsuit. Therein lies the problem! While hang gliders can coast in for a safe landing, a wingsuit has to deploy their parachutes and float the rest of the way to the ground -- they simply can't reduce their speed fast enough for a safe landing without the use of a chute. Much like 2022’s Batsuit, The Batman’s Batmobile directly reflects this Batman’s personality. A little DIY, a little grimy, a lot of parts that fit together into something that works, but not gracefully. The Batman’sDIY Batmobile Warner Bros.

Whereas other Batman iterations have been fully outfitted with the sleekest of Batsuits and the most evolved gadgets, The Batman’sBatsuit reflects that we are meeting a different kind of Bruce Wayne. Though 2022’s The Batmanis not an origin story, Bruce is still early into his crime-fighting career. And he really does not have it all together yet. 2022’s Batsuit Reveals Batman’s Inner State Warner Bros. Taken from the "Art of" book that's just been released, we get a closer look at the Batsuit donned by Robert Pattinson in the movie, along with the wingsuit his Bruce Wayne used to fly through Gotham City's imposing skyline. As we saw in the movie, this Dark Knight didn't have the smoothest of landings - a reminder that the vigilante is still in a very early stage of his vigilante career. Schumacher’s production designer, Barbara Ling, drew inspiration from 1930s Manhattan and the Neo-Tokyo of the 1988 anime Akira. She kept what she called the larger-than-life “World’s Fair proportions” so as to “not lose Gotham’s sensibility of overbearingness burdened by crooks.” Gotham in Batman Batman Forever concept art Batman Forever concept art Gotham in Batman Forever When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”As mentioned by Dillon and implied by the release of other concept art via The Art of The Batman, originally, Farrell might have had simply a broken nose. This sort of design for Penguin would have certainly been a departure from how the “ugly” character is usually portrayed as Farrell is widely considered attractive—which is likely why Reeves and his team went with the oversized trench coat, bodysuit, and facial scars. However, the concept art does give off a Fredo vibe. In the past, Farrell and Reeves have said that their Penguin takes emotional inspiration from John Cazale’s Fredo in The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II. In The Batman, Oz is a foot soldier of Carmine Falcone and has yet to be taken seriously by his associates. Reeves ( Cloverfield, War for the Planet of the Apes) has steered unapologetically into the disturbing underbelly of Gotham to produce a film that demands attention and provides a punishing showcase for the talents of the movie’s cowled, scowling star Robert Pattinson. To bring Gotham to the silver screen for Tim Burton’s Batman (1989), Production Designer Anton Furst created what he described as “a city run by crime, with a riot of architectural styles.” Over the years, Batman has taken many shapes. He’s starred in comics, leapt onto the silver screen, taken on camp, drama, and even appeared in musicals. But despite his ever-changing form, three iconic Batmanfixtures have emerged over time: Batman’s Batsuit, Batmobile, and Batcave. And so, when a new Batman emerges from the darkness, as Robert Pattinson’s has in 2022, the first questions we have to ask revolve around these three Batobjects. Warner Bros.

There were mixed reactions to the costume initially, with some laughing at the Riddler's appearance. Given that it was such a departure from prior representations, some took to social media to compare The Batman character to The Gimp from Pulp Fiction and even Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Many came to the movie's defense though, expressing interest in its similarities to the Zodiac Killer, and with Dano's disturbing portrayal receiving so much praise upon its release, a lot of negative opinions have since changed. Also starring Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth) and Zoë Kravitz (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), The Batman sees Pattinson's Bruce face off against the likes of Colin Farrell (as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin) and Paul Dano (Edward Nashton/Riddler).The first movie that he remembers being a passionate fan of was the first Toy Story movie. This led to a love of animated movies and television series. In addition to classic Disney animation and the Looney Tunes shorts, Adam is also a big fan of animation from the 1990s. This includes TV shows like Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Goof Troop. He is also a big fan of shows like The Simpsons and Futurama. From the makeshift gear and holes in his cape to the foreboding darkness of Gotham, the above art is indicative of the vibe Reeves' has masterfully attached to The Batman, something overtly evident in promotional material alone. The image of Batman looming over his corrupt city is an iconic one. And The Batman is poised to sear a plethora of soon-to-be iconic images into the brains of audiences. The film's costume design, action sequences, and cinematography lend credence to the idea that The Batman will/could feel like a comic book panel come to life.
