Explore the principles of semi-modular synthesis through these beautiful machines, and supercharge your creativity with dozens of tips, techniques, and patches – perfect for synth beginners, experienced pros, Korg enthusiasts, and ARP lovers alike. Modular synthesis concepts and ideas Insider interviews with Moog engineers and a look into the company’s factory in Asheville, North Carolina by exploring the functional, artistic, philosophical, and aesthetic worlds within the mysterious link between player and machine. Ean Golden, Axel Hartmann, Larry Heard, Roger Linn, Keith McMillen, Moldover, Jordan Rudess, Dave Smith, Tatsuya Takahashi, and others, along with well-known music industry brands like Ableton, Arturia, DJ TechTools, Elektron, Korg, Make Noise, monome, Moog, Native Instruments, Novation, Propellerhead, Roland, Teenage Engineering, and Yamaha.

PATCH & TWEAKhas a foreword by Suzanne Ciani, is written by Kim Bjørn and Chris Meyer, and edited by Paul Nagle. There are also numerous patch diagrams throughout, from basic concepts to favorite patches of many of the artists we interviewed. And beyond that, the information on how each type of module works and interacts with others will lead you to create new sounds – your own sounds – from scratch. We also don’t just tell you now to use that popular module everybody said you should buy; we make you aware of dozens of modules that perform similar functions in different ways. Our goal is to show you what to look for in a module to meet your own specific needs, as well as what new capabilities it will give you.

STAMP OUT WEAK TONE!

The NTS-2 Kit and “PATCH & TWEAK with KORG” book were conceived and developed to complement each other, providing not only fundamental knowledge, but also the tools to guide and inspire synth lovers through their music journey.

PATCH & TWEAK with Moog is a practical guided tour and learning resource for Moog’s five semi-modular instruments the Mother-32, DFAM, Subharmonicon, Grandmother, and Matriarch. Clear tutorials and inspiring example patches cover each of these Moog instruments in detail – then combine them with one another and with third-party synthesizer modules to expand their power.Featured Korg / ARP members: Fumio Mieda, Tatsuya Takahashi, Dina Pearlman, David Friend, and many others PATCH & TWEAK is a comprehensive look at modular synthesizers. It explores how to build them, how to use them, and how to get the most out of them, with beautiful illustrations and step-by-step tutorials with easy-to-read patch diagrams.

A cornerstone ofPATCH & TWEAKis a bouquet of inspirational interviews with significant creators and major artists. Learn about their systems, philosophies, patching secrets, performance tips, and passion for modular synthesis. PUSH TURN MOVE is written by Danish designer, author, lecturer and electronic musician Kim Bjørn and edited by Mike Metlay, editor at Recording Magazine and Paul Nagle, reviewer at Sound on Sound Magazine.Valuable as all this is, the interviews and synth history features might well be the main attraction for some readers. They’re consistently colourful, often intriguing and inspiring, and all evocatively illustrated with photographs. The odd sniff of Moog sycophancy is easily understood in context, and actually there’s at least as much implied criticism of individual synth models (Trent Reznor talks about his Voyager “resting in the shed”), and frank recognition that not every synth excels in every role. Other luminaries include Suzanne Ciani, Hideki Matsutake (Tomita’s assistant in the ’70s), Daniel Miller (Mute Records) and Bob Moog’s long‑time collaborator Herb Deutsch. A cornerstone of PATCH & TWEAK is a bouquet of inspirational interviews with significant creators and major artists. Learn about their systems, philosophies, patching secrets, performance tips, and passion for modular synthesis. A flexible Wave Generator mode makes NTS-2 much more than an oscilloscope. It has two oscillators with dedicated outputs. Each oscillator can create a variety of waveforms – sine, square, triangle, sawtooth, pulse, and noise – whose shape and phase can be adjusted to suit many applications. Very pretty book, and I browse it every now and then when I'm confused or need inspiration, and I have learned things. I wish there were more patches and exercises, and that they were searchable by functions or other key words. They are scattered around the book and serve as illustrations of the kind of stuff the people they interviewed like to do with their gear. Which is OK, it never pretended to be a patch library or a manual. But this is the most *useful* part of it.

After the foreword from synth royalty Suzanne Ciani, there's a concise Modular 101 section, covering the basics of synthesis, sampling and synth architecture. Perhaps the team worried that diving straight into too much theory would put people off. I would have been happy with a bit more. Thankfully, as the book settles into its taxonomy of synth modules it continues its gentle instruction, in the context of the hardware categories. NTS-2 wouldn’t be complete without a precise and easy-to-use Tuner with multiple display modes! Nu:Tekt DIY fun Synth beginners and seasoned musicians alike will find the journey not just educational, but also inspirational and full of new discoveries. These sounds can be used in the audio range or as control voltage sources, and they can be set to cycle continuously or act as one-shot impulses; that means you can turn them into LFOs, envelopes, triggers, and control voltage generators, as well as sound sources. Attaching the NTS-2 to any patchable synthesizer instantly expands its power in useful ways, making it an analogue synth player’s dream tool. Tuner

Featured artists: More than 25 artists including Pete Townshend, Jean-Michel Jarre, Richard Devine, Andrew Huang and many others PATCH & TWEAK with Moog is the result of more than a year of extensive collaboration between Moog employees, author Kim Bjørn, editor Mike Metlay, electronic music icons, and established and emerging artists. Second, Patch & Tweak With Moog was created in collaboration with Moog Music, so it’s not intended to offer a critical perspective on Moog designs or put them into a context with other synth designs.
