About this deal

You can skip this if you don’t have it, but an orange slice is the classic garnish for an Aperol spritz.

Like most of the own brands we found, Aperol has a strength of 11%. It was the recognisable apéritif I'd tasted many times before - reddish-orange in colour and bitter, sweet and fruity in taste. It had an almost coppery flavour, but enjoyed in my sunny garden, it was undeniably refreshing. It tasted like summer and, in all honesty, I was doubtful any of the others would compare. Asda Apertini Promotion Period: The "Promotion Period" opens at 00:01 on 25th November 2019 and closes at 23:59 on 29th February 2020 or when all 5000 glasses available have been claimed. All entries outside of this period will not be valid.

I was right in thinking that Aperol would be hard to beat - none of the supermarket versions were better the original in terms of flavour. But - I thought M&S's was on a par. Aperol Spritz is best served with ice, in a large wine glass, garnished with a slice of orange, in good company. Aperol, vodka and cider. "I love this combination," says Alessandro Mannello, mixologist for Le Bab. "I then add some agave syrup, lemon juice, three dashes of orange bitters then some orange peel." The Promoter reserves the right to verify all entries and to refuse to accept any entry where there are reasonable grounds to believe there has been a breach of these terms and conditions or any instructions forming part of this promotion. The Promoter will be the final arbiter on all decisions and these will be binding and no correspondence will be entered into. Goat cheese, fresh mozzarella, or burrata with crusty bread (perhaps with olive oil and/or good jam)

While Prosecco and soda water is the classic mix, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy Aperol. We spoke to different mixologists to find their perfect alternative Aperol Spritz recipe: It’s just a splash, but don’t be tempted to skimp on the soda in your Aperol Spritz as it works wonders for the finished drink.“By adding soda water, we replace the carbonation that gets lost whilst pouring Prosecco and stirring the drink. Since Aperol truly comes alive when combined with bubbles, the most seamless way to experiment with Aperol is to riff on that Spritz, says Grant Gedemer, the director of food and beverage at The Godfrey Hotel in Chicago who uses sparkling rosé instead of prosecco and adds fresh seasonal fruit. “You can also add it to a Gin & Tonic,” he says. “The dryness adds a nice complement to the citrus, and the effervescence brings out its flavor too.” This has the most vibrant colour and is a new release by Morrisons - which is perhaps why it was positioned right at the entrance of the shop I went to. They are selling it as a way "to enjoy a classic Summer Spritz for less". And that it is as it is the joint cheapest of the options we taste tested. The Aperol flavours were all there, but this one was sweeter and fruitier. A good option if you're on the fence about Aperol and find the bitterness a little overpowering. Personally, I like the sharpness of Aperol, so I preferred the original, but Apertini is a tasty alternative - and great value for money. M&S AperitivoAperol is a low-alcohol (11% ABV) Italian bitter typically served as an aperitif before a meal to stimulate the appetite. It is made with rhubarb, oranges, gentian root, cinchona bark, and more. Skardy lamented that "spritz used to be cheap, [and] now it's a luxury for yuppies". But nothing could stop the rise of Aperol, a sort of orange tidal wave that, according to food expert Eleonora Cozzella, was powered by the easy appeal of its colour and taste. "It has a chromatic coherence: it's the colour of the summer evening. You say Aperol Spritz, and you already see yourself on a terrace at sunset overlooking the Adriatic Sea," she explained. (It's such a distinctive hue that Pasini is creating a pantone colour chart for beginner mixologists who want to get the right tone). Only Aperol will do here. Aperol is a bright orange apéritif. The brand describes the flavors as, “zesty orange with complex herbal scents harmonized with a touch of vanilla.” Look for Aperol near the liqueurs or amaros at the liquor store. 2) Prosecco

The 3:2:1 method is the traditional method and means three parts Prosecco to two parts Aperol and one part soda water.Aperol reminds me of bitter grapefruit, refreshing and bright,” says Kevin Murphy, the bar director and assistant manager of Daisies in Chicago. “Of the bitter red Italian spirits family, I find it the most approachable and less divisive.” He adds it to a Sangria with red wine and tangy kombucha and believes it works wonderfully with lighter spirits, although he admits that the Paper Plane, a bourbon-based modern classic, proves that’s far from a hard-and-fast rule. If, like my mum, you've never heard of Aperol until now - it's an Italian bitter apéritif, known for its distinctive bright orange colour and unique bittersweet taste. In my non-expert opinion, it tastes like boozy orange peel, but add it to prosecco with a splash of soda water and it creates something magical... Aperol Spritz. It's a big loss for humanity," said Pasini. The olive garnish adds a touch of salt that tempers the sweetness, especially if you don't rinse the brine. And any serious bartender in Venice would add a full olive with the pit, which is part of the culture of the drink in the city. "There is always that awkward moment when you don't know where to put the pit," conceded Cozzella. "On the napkin? Next to the chips?" The main ingredients are an infusion of herbs and roots with two of its most distinctive flavours being oranges and rhubarb.

Prosecco – the perfect mixer for an Aperol Spritz. A freshly opened bottle will always achieve the best flavour and the right amount of bubbles. Classic aperol spritz is made of aperol, prosecco, and club soda (or soda water). In my recipe, I skip the club soda in favor of a little freshly squeezed orange juice. Orange juice adds a little natural sweetness to balance the bitterness of the aperol. A couple of my testers said they could have happily had this as an evening drink rather than in the sun as it had such a rich flavour. Plenty going on and a bargain price. Now that you have your glass, discover the original Aperol Spritz recipe to make this staple drink: Compared to Aperol, the liqueur smelled slightly strange - almost chemically. It was also noticeably paler in the glass. To match the vibrant hue and zesty flavour of Aperol, oranges are the only acceptable garnish here. Simply drop an orange wedge into the glass to infuse all of the flavours.
