NES Pharmacy provides support to pharmacy technicians through a Vocational Training Foundation programme, designed to build in a progressive manner a common set of behaviours and skills required by all pharmacy technicians. We also support pharmacy technicians to progress towards the Professional Development Award (PDA) in Assessment and Supply of Individual Patients' Medicines at SCQF Level 7. Vocational training foundation programme for pharmacy technicians Our clinical services are highly developed and the merger of Bart Health will allow a wider group of patients to have direct access to our merged pool of expertise. NES supports a culture where speaking up is encouraged. As part of this and where possible, we encourage patients to use their own medicines when they come into hospital.The Trust has six dispensaries and a supply service that is co-ordinated from central stores at The Royal London Hospital (Medicines Distribution Unit), Whipps Cross University Hospital and Newham University Hospital. We are moving towards technician-led organisation of these functions. Automation and a robotic storage system have helped to smooth the workflow and have resulted in faster work turnaround. Scottish Pharmacy Experiential Learning' is funded by Scottish Government and organised in partnership between Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde, NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and other pharmacy stakeholders. Multi-profession resources that align to the pillars of practice are available on the TURAS Learn advanced practice toolkit . The toolkit represents the similarities in advanced practice across professions. It contains excellent resources on leadership, education and research which are relevant for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, as well as contextualising advanced practice for supervisors and line managers. If your hospital doctor prescribes new or different medication, he/she will either write and inform your GP (who will give you a prescription) or give you a prescription to take to the hospital pharmacy. Our specialist pharmacists have a great deal of experience in audit, drug evaluation and drawing up prescribing guidelines, formularies and shared care policies. The Sore Throat Test and Treat service offers patients with sore throat symptoms to access clinical screening, clinical assessment and appropriate treatment from a community pharmacy. The service is provided by accredited pharmacists, and patients are advised to confirm availability before travelling to a specific pharmacy.To take responsibility for the appropriate use of medicines in our patients, and to enjoy working towards this goal. Foundation Training Year (FTY) Our prescription services also include disposal of old or expired medication, along with advice and support if you're taking some new medication for the first time. Medicine information Levonelle One Step is an emergency contraceptive that can be used within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex or if your contraceptive method has failed.

Quality control – this service can help with problems requiring the analysis of medicines or raw materials. A medical gas testing service is provided and the department is responsible for co-ordinating drug recalls initiated by the Committee on Safety of Medicines. Getting your prescription If you have had sex without using contraception, or you think your contraception has failed, you may be able to use Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC). Every consultation is private and confidential and will be in a private consultation room. Our fully trained and accredited Pharmacist will supply EHC when appropriate to clients in line with the requirements of a locally agreed Patient Group Direction (PGD). NES Pharmacy supports Pharmacist Independent Prescribers (PIPs) both within their training period , in implementation of their training into practice once they have qualified and those returning to prescribing practice. We commission both Schools of Pharmacy in Scotland to organise and run Independent Prescriber courses each year. Pharmacists who practise in Scotland can also apply to NES Pharmacy for funding to undertake these courses. We provide support through clinical skills courses, teach and treat centres (in collaboration with health boards).
