The 50UK4D63DB punches above its price with its colour, too, achieving saturation levels we’ve seen TVs costing many times as much fail to achieve. That gives you at least a flavour of the wide colour gamuts that accompany the vast majority of HDR sources. Toshiba QA5D 55 Inch 4K HDR Android Quantum Dot TV, TRU Picture Engine, HDR10+, Dolby Vision & Atmos, Sound by Onkyo, Alexa & Google Assistant It doesn’t help, either, that the mist and clouding that hangs over dark scenes can sometimes take on a reddish or bluish tint that throws up an even greater barrier between you and what you’re trying to watch.

Dolby Vision is far from the only HDR format the 55QA5D63DB supports. In fact, it also covers all three of the other key HDR formats found in today’s content world: HDR10, HLG and HDR10+. This means that the 55QA5D63DB will take in the best version available of any source it’s presented with. As Toshiba’s flagship TV for 2022, it includes all three of the Japanese manufacturer’s TRU Picture Engine technologies: TRU Resolution, TRU Micro Dimming and TRU Flow. There’s support for Dolby Atmos, the Dolby Vision HDR format, Chromecast is built in and Google Assistant can be accessed via the remote control. Sound is provided by Onkyo, while the QA5D uses Android TV as its operating system. There’s no local dimming system to deliver local light controls, but this isn’t surprising at all at the 55QA5D63DB’s price point. The television also has a variety of other features that enhance the viewing experience. It has three HDMI ports, which allow users to connect multiple devices, such as gaming consoles or Blu-ray players. It also has a USB port for connecting external devices. Design With the name currently licensed by Turkish tech giant Vestel for the UK, the Toshiba brand has been building up a decent reputation in recent years for bringing the most coveted display tech to those on a budget.

Potentially undermining these hopes, though, is the 55QA5D63DB’s use of an IPS type of LCD panel rather than a VA one. This means, based on past experience, that it may remain enjoyable to watch from a wider viewing angle than VA rivals, but will likely struggle to deliver serious contrast. The tech’s main advantage is greater luminosity and better color coverage compared to what you’d expect from a regular LED display. The Toshiba UF3D delivers an excellent gaming experience thanks to its advanced technology and low input lag. The television has a 4K Ultra HD display with HDR technology, which delivers stunning and lifelike images. The low input lag ensures minimal delay between the controller and the on-screen action, resulting in a more immersive gaming experience. Viewing Angle HDR - makes whites brighter, intensifies colour and enhances the overall picture for an epic cinematic effect. The speakers even have the dynamic range and power to keep on growing in step with an escalating action scene – something many TVs costing way more fail to do – and the sound consistently has direct impact, rather than sounding as if it’s all getting swallowed up somewhere behind the screen.

TRU Micro Dimming improves contrast across every part of the image. TRU Flow reduces image judder, even during rapid cuts and fast-moving scenes. And TRU Resolution upscales a range of non-4K content, to create a more high-resolution image that draws you into a truly vivid experience. The two blade-style feet you get with the TV are solid, easy to attach, leave the TV feeling stable, and become almost invisible when you’re watching the TV head-on. The IPS panel can’t stop contrast suffering quite badly during viewing from an angle, though, giving us one apt final reminder that for all the things the 55QA5D63DB gets right, its problems with contrast are so fundamental during all but the most glaringly bright content that they’re really pretty hard to live with. In fact, we much prefer the pictures of Toshiba’s substantially cheaper 50UK4D63B, proving – not for the first time – that just throwing Quantum Dots at a screen isn’t the guarantee of better picture quality you might expect. At least at the budget end of the TV world. The higher native brightness of the 55QA5D63DB also means it suffers less with clipping (loss of subtle shading and details) in the brightest areas than the 50UK4D63DB.In fact, while we’re obviously not talking about levels of brightness even close to those the best OLEDs or, especially, premium LCD TVs can produce, the 55QA5D63DB is bright enough to deliver comfortably the biggest escalation from SDR to HDR of any TV in its price class. The Toshiba UF3D has a wide viewing angle, which ensures that the picture quality remains consistent no matter where you are sitting. This is especially important for larger living spaces where viewers may be seated at different angles. Picture Settings With Dolby Atmos, immersive sound waves flow around you and the room, creating a truly cinematic experience. Combined with an internal subwoofer combined with our integrated speakers, designed by Onkyo, provide everything you need for an unforgettable sound experience.
