About this deal

I'd be interested to see if the other flavours are better, as I've heard very good things about the Ice Pop and Blue Raspberry versions, but with all of the hype, it just seems underwhelming. We'll also share a cost breakdown highlighting which retailer currently sells Prime for the best price. Ingredient Analysis: Is Prime Actually Healthy? Red 40 is an artificial dye, and this type of ingredient is likely harmful to human health based on a medical review published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health. The study authors found that Red 40 can be contaminated with carcinogens (cancer-causing substances). Most importantly, it's formulated with whole food ingredients like coconut water and himalayan pink mineral salt. There are no additive ingredients in this product that we consider questionable from a health perspective.

Drinking it, I was tasked to see if it particularly improved my awareness and energy, or even just hydrated myself more than a glass of water, but I didn't notice any significant difference. I can see it being helpful if you finish a work-out or if you're hungover and looking to get some vitamins and minerals into your system, but that really depends on if you would be able to get it more easily in the future. Citric acid is a preservative and flavor enhancer typically manufactured from a fungus and shown in medical case reports to cause whole-body inflammation in some individuals. We're surprised that in 2022 a popular "wellness" brand with significant funding and (presumably) significant profit margins is using older-generation artificial sweeteners like sucralose instead of newer-generation sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit which may have superior health and safety profiles (in our opinion). I know I've thrown around words like "artificial" and "overwhelmingly sweet", but that doesn't actually make it a bad thing. Honestly, if you did a blind taste test without knowing the hype you probably wouldn't notice much difference compared to other hydration/sports drinks. The unrealistic strongman images prey on young men’s vulnerabilities – and end up making them unhealthier. Illustration: Guillem Casasús/The GuardianAcesulfame potassium is another artificial sweetener in Prime, and it’s been found in clinical studies to have negative effects on the gut and negative effects on the brain.

Meta Moon was okay, but other flavours such as Ice Pop and Blue Raspberry are meant to be nicer (Image: Zhara Simpson/PlymouthLive) L-isoleucine, l-valine and l-leucine are branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). This category of amino acid is used to support muscle recovery, but a meta-study on BCAAs published in the Nutrients journal shows that most clinical trials use a BCAA dose of at minimum 5,000 milligrams (mg). Prime also contains a number of added vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A and vitamin B12. We recommend avoiding "fortified" products with synthetic vitamins and mineral additives entirely unless otherwise instructed by a doctor. Maybe Prime fans really believe that the drink will make them feel extra-hydrated in some deep but not entirely defined way. The label boasts that “with bold, thirst quenching flavours to help you refresh, replenish, and refuel, Prime is the perfect boost for every endeavor”. Who wouldn’t want that?

This product provides a modest amount of sodium, potassium and magnesium (electrolytes), and contains 100 mg of caffeine for an energy boost during workouts.

It's fine, if you like that kind of thing, but it's nothing new or particularly ground-breaking. The flavour is good if you enjoy sweet, fruit-based drinks, but is it something I'm going to choose over Lucozade, Powerade, or Gatorade? Probably not. Sucralose is an artificial sweetener shown t o negatively impact insulin function in healthy adults in a clinical trial published in the Nutrition Journal. Car insurance company Veygo has issued a warning to young people, especially learner drivers, who would be more sensitive to the effects. According to the firm, such high levels could reduce alertness, control, and mood – all increasing the chances of an accident behind the wheel. As the author of this article, I wanted to try Prime myself in an athletic setting to give my take on its taste and effects.
