About this deal

I'm generally a Freida fan, but oh my goodness this one was a giant disaster (I guess in my seemingly unpopular opinion based on Goodreads and bookstagram). I sat on this review for over a week because I didn't want to jump to any harsh conclusions because I honestly do enjoy Frieda's other work, but I can't get over the plot and rhetoric in this book. Terrible and harmful representation of mental illness. Missed opportunity... DNF after reading 'crazy'/some other negative bullshit too many times.

As Amy was making her rounds for the evening, she heard a noise coming from Seclusion One. It sounded like someone snarling and growling. But what was worse this person sounded like he was breaking through the door. Amy was terrified, but she knew no matter what she wasn’t going near that room. Psychological studies have demonstrated that men have more amorous feelings towards women wearing red than any other color. They are more likely to express the desire to take a woman wearing red out on a date, and are also willing to spend more money on the date. Moreover, the men in these studies could not identify the origin of these feelings. They just liked the girl in red.” Joker & Harley Quinn wannabes taking on the patients at the psychiatric Ward D in Freida McFadden’s newest (entertaining, but insensitive) psychological thriller. 🤪 That’s all you’ll get from me about the plot/storyline. Anything else could be a spoiler, and no spoilers allowed here! I listened to this audiobook and really enjoyed the narration by Leslie Howard. She did an amazing job, I look forward to listening to more books narrated by her.

Dear McFadden. I know you’re a doctor and probably have immense respect for humans in need. Why then, do I get the feeling that you have prejudices towards people with mental health issues ? Giving you the benefit of the doubt, I will assume that you created a character who true to form had to protect herself by projecting her fear of herself onto others. Still, I don’t like how the patients in ward D are depicted. I found the main character of this book to be a little annoying and I definitely prefer her books written from dual POV. This is all written from one perspective (although it does have Dual Timeline). Authors, if you are a member of the Goodreads Author Program, you can edit information about your own books. Find out how in this guide. Amy is a medical student that is required to do a rotation on Ward D. This psychiatric floor is the last place she wants to spend an entire night, but not for reasons anyone would ever know. From the time she arrives on the floor, she just can’t shake the bad feeling that continues to overcome her. Turns out she may have more reasons to be concerned than she ever could have imagined…will she live to tell about her night spent on Ward D? I am a big fan of Freida McFadden, particularly her Housemaid duet. However, this book just did not work for me. First and foremost, the mental health rep was done in such a negative way, I worry that those who suffer from the illnesses represented will be further stigmatized. Derogatory terms were used by the “medical professionals” further adding to this negative portrayal. But as the night goes on, both patients and staff go missing. There is talk of danger by patients and as Amy tries to make sense of everything, the evening becomes a nightmare. There are definitely complications with this shift that Amy is about to work. For one thing, she has some familiarity with the psych ward as her best friend Jade was committed when they were both 16 years of age. Due to Jade’s hospitalization at that time, Amy and Jade’s friendship had dissolved. Furthermore, Jade made a statement about Amy state of mind then that still bothers her. Factor this. Jade is on the ward that Amy is working, Ward D. No longer friends by any stretch of the imagination, at the very least Amy just wants to get through the night.

Amy has been dreading her evening working on Ward D, the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. There are very specific reasons why she never wanted to do this required overnight rotation. Reasons nobody can ever find out. amy has been dreading her evening working on ward d the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. their are very specific reasons why she never wanted to do this required overnight rotation. reasons nobody can ever find out.

p.249 Jade always complained about how hard it was to be on antipsychotic medications…… I’m beginning to realize what she has gone through over the last 8 years. So I kept thinking of that nurses review and it hit me. Perhaps they just don't know how a violent psyche patient gets delivered to them because when they have gone through the process they are delivered in a catatonic/zombie like state to the psyche floor and are no longer any problem at all. For me this one is (more silly than serious) with some pretty animated characters. The Mad Hatter could be possibly in for the night, or Spider Man may make an appearance!🕸️ I’m not dead. Did you think I was? That I’m some corpse my husband propped up in front of the second-floor window to frighten his guests? I’m not. I’m very much alive. And I’m afraid my husband is a murderer.” There isn’t much that surprises me when it comes to reading books. I’m what you’d call a seasoned vet. Having said that, you have to be a pretty good author to fool me in a story line, but I have to say McFadden did an amazing job in keeping the reader guessing.
