The cover has 12 ties to secure it to the frame. The outside of the cover also features 4 fabric loops with metal D-rings. This allows you to attach guy ropes to further stabilise the frame. However, if you’re using pots to grow tomato seedlings then it’s a good idea to start much smaller, usually with 4” pots. This gives the roots lots of space to spread, so you can transfer the seedling to larger pots after 2-3 weeks of growing. If they outgrow their next pot, don’t hesitate in transferring to an even larger pot! What size of grow bag for tomatoes in a greenhouse? Source

Alternatively, take a look at our Best Buy pop-up plastic greenhouses How to use grow bags The square grow bags range in size from 3 gallons to 10 gallons, making them ideal for all but the largest plants. When the soil is questionable, an alternative is to use grow bags and large pots. Pots or bags can be placed on top of white plastic sheeting that has been placed over the soil. If no diseases are present, potting media, including grow bags, can be reused at least once for different crops. Tomatoes thrive in rich, free-draining but moisture-retentive soil, so dig plenty of garden compost into the ground before planting. Choose your warmest, sunniest spot, sheltered from wind. They are much less space-consuming: If you have a smaller space in which to grow garden bags are the way to go. When considering storage in the off-season remember that grow bags can be stored completely flat, taking up virtually no space at all. You can make these yourself using old plant pots. Just cut the bottom of an old 8/9” plant pot and place it a few inches into the grow bag – just cut more of the bag away t make space. This lets you increase the soil volume without needing to buy purpose made bottomless plant pots. They won’t break: Unlike traditional clay flowerpots grow bags are extremely durable; you will not have to worry about them breaking even if you drop them or toss them around. The handles on these heavy-duty grow bags are made of reinforced 300D nylon to ensure that they’re strong enough to carry the weight of an entire bag of soil.

Young plants are also available in spring and early summer from garden centres and online suppliers. These are ideal if you don’t have the time or space to grow from seed, but you may find the choice of varieties is limited. Scoop out compost from each square leaving a hole big enough for the root ball of your plant. Put a plant in each hole and refill around it with compost. The top of each root ball should be just below the top of the bag.

Grow bags typically have better airflow and drainage than the average pot, and most have handles to make it easy to move them from inside your greenhouse to the outdoors or vice versa. Why Use Greenhouse Grow Bags Allotment Garden There are also lots of varieties to choose from, offering fruits of various sizes, shapes, flavours and textures. Fruit colours range from traditional red to dark purple, pink, orange, yellow or green, and even striped. There are heirloom varieties, grown for many generations, as well as modern, blight-resistant choices. There are miniature round fruits, elongated plum varieties, smooth uniform salad tomatoes and huge, wrinkled, mis-shapen beefsteaks, all full of flavour and with their own individual characters. This is probably the simplest system you can use to keep your plants hydrated. All you need to do is place a container filled with water directly under the grow bag. Ensure the plants are not submerged in the water, the roots will pull the water up as needed. All you need to do is keep an eye on the container and fill it up when it gets low. Easy-peasy! Can You Re-Use Old Grow Bags?

Remove from the propagator once seedlings appear, which may take one to two weeks. Continue to keep the young plants warm, in bright light, and water regularly. Dark Green offers a unique twist on the classic grow bag, as their product is taller than it is wide. These dimensions are ideal for crops that require deep roots for maximum production while still benefitting from natural air pruning. In late May, when the plants each have five leaves, we plant two into each of our grow bags. We grow them in a greenhouse, where they're trained up wires, and we remove sideshoots below the fruit. Additionally, several studies done by Dr. Carl E. Whitcome of Oklahoma State University have shown that plants grown in soft containers grew up to 15 percent bigger than those grown in rigid plastic pots thanks to the natural process of air pruning. Most summer veg will be in the bags for several weeks, so you’ll need to feed them. Add controlled-release feed before you plant by mixing it into the compost where you have cut holes, or add a liquid feed twice a week once the first fruits have formed. Follow the dosage and frequency advice on the bottle. To plant in a container – choose a pot that is at least 30cm (1ft) wide and deep, and fill it with good quality potting compost. Position one plant in the centre, firming it in gently then watering generously. You can also plant two cucumbers in a growing bag. They can be frozen, ideally after blanching in boiling water, which helps to preserve their colour and texture.
