Can’t have a book list about World Hunger without this one! Who can read it and help but understand why the hungry caterpillar is so very hungry? After all, without getting what it needs, how else is it supposed to transform into what it was born to be? In Lessons 2-4, students added ideas to the Reasons to Plant a Tree anchor chart during the focused read-aloud of A Tree Is Nice . In this lesson, they use the anchor chart during the Matching Opinions with Reasons game. Well, this is the fourth or fifth picture book I’ve read about Wangari Maathai. I still haven’t read her autobiography or her book about the Green Belt Movement. No booklist centring on World Hunger Day would be complete without this first book by a man who has inspired so many to become anti-food poverty champions, and managed to make some of our most frostbitten-to-the-heart politicians undertake a policy U-turn or two! Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc.)?

Week beginning 29th June - Theme “Famous and Significant People

The illustrations by Nelson are mixed collage of paint and printed fabric, layering the clothing & panorama with printed fabrics all on gessoed board. The beautiful images are quite striking and a departure from his previous work. The government sells a lot of land to big companies. They cut down forests for timber and clear land for coffee plantations. More people listen to her message. She is elected to Kenya’s parliament, and continued to plant trees. the trees are chopped down, erosion carries away the fertile soil, the water in the streams dries up. The land is destroyed and many people go hungry. In college, many of Wangari’s science professors were women. From them she learned that a woman could do anything she wanted to, even it it hadn’t been done before. Tell students that more than one reason can go to a place because you can have many reasons for the opinion you make. For ELLs: During or after Work Time A, guide students through a Language Dive. Refer to Language Dive Guide II: Mama Miti , Questions We Can Ask during a Language Dive anchor chart, and Chunk Chart II: Mama Miti . Display Sentence Strip Chunks II: Mama Miti . Mama Miti is based on the amazing life of Wangari Maathi (2004 Nobel Peace Prize recipient), who grew up in Nyeri, Kenya, and turned her love of nature and trees into grassroots movement to combat deforestation. The illustrations by Nelson capture the beauty of the Motherland with vibrant colors and flattering images. " -- Ebony Magazine

And it is only thanks to those hearts and to so many incredible, oft-invisible works, that I wrote The Great (Food) Bank Heist (heading your way on 1 st July - more details coming soon!). And why today, I want to celebrate those books which do not shy away from the issues of hunger and poverty daily impacting our children, and who instead, help them to recognise the s/heroes they already are… Onjali's top reads for World Hunger Day UK The text ... seemed a little dry for a picture book. Which is kind of sad, because as it turns out it is quite an important story. I had never heard of her before but after reading some of the "afterword" she seems like a really interesting person who has done amazing things. For ELLs (Recalling the Language Dive): Review the Language Dive sentence from A Tree Is Nice in Lesson 2 to reinforce the concept of pairing an opinion with a reason. After about 15 minutes, invite students to turn to an elbow partner and share their watercolor painting, describing the place.
