Important: For mechanically loaded areas, e.g. flooring, we recommend max. one coat and generally a thin top coat with clear Osmo Polyx®-Oil Original. For white flooring, a top coat with lightly white pigmented Osmo Polyx®-Oil Tints 3040 White. Drying time of Wood Wax Finish used on floors, approx. 24 hours (normal climatic conditions, 23 °C/ 50 % rel. humidity). Ventilate well while drying. After 2-3 weeks, the floor surface is fully cured. Other household cleaning products such as vanish, bleach, baking soda etc. are likely to cause severe discolouration or staining. There are several brands of wax and, more recently, companies have started offering waxes in a great variety of colors besides the traditional clear and dark. The ones simply called “dark” or ” antiquing” wax are still my favorite. No matter what brand you choose, my only recommendation is to look for a very soft one. The softer the better, as it allows you more time to work on your piece before it dries.

you can do as many wax layers as you’d like playing with different colours of waxes just as long as you add the clear wax first. the longer the wax stays on, the harder the wax gets. If I’m selling a piece of furniture, I make sure to not move it/transport it for a good week so the wax has time to really set and harden Intensive colour (two coats): with Osmo Flat Brush or Microfibre Roller, apply very thinly to the clean and dry wood surface along the wood grain and spread well. Ventilate well while drying. Apply the second coat – also thinly. If you think you went too heavy in a certain area, don’t panic. Just apply a little clear wax over the dark wax and wipe it with a clean rag. The clear wax will remove the most of the dark wax so you can start that spot over. Wood grain remains visible with ‘transparent’ tones and wood grain is hidden (after two coats) of ‘intensive’ tones.

HOW TO APPLY DARK WAX

Ventilate well while drying and avoid covering the surface. After 2-3 weeks, the floor surface is fully cured. One of the simplest and most beautiful ways to give an antique look to a piece of painted furniture is by applying dark wax.

if you ever need to repaint the furniture piece again, you’ll need to take the wax off first with a solvent (like paint thinner) or the paint won’t adhere. As a colouring primer for flooring: Leave to dry for approx. 24 hrs to allow pigmentation to cure before applying second coat with Osmo Polyx®-Oil. Sanding Sealer (007749006) applied by brush or rubber and allow to dry (approximately 30 minutes at 20°C). When dry, apply the wax polish using 0000 grade wire wool to achieve the smoothest finish and allow to dry for a few minutes. When dry, buff with a clean, dry lint-free cloth. Unsealed wood may be waxed without sealing, but this method will give a much lower shine. Today’s contributor is Patricia from The Wood Spa and she is a sharing a tutorial on how to use dark wax to age furniture. All posts contributed by Patricia for Grillo Designs can be found HERE . When using 3111 White as the first coat on flooring, a second coat of 3040 White from Polyx®-Oil Tints is recommended to avoid yellowing.

waxing replaces having to use a polyurethane coat and is typically used over chalk-type paints or Fusion Mineral Paint (FMP is an acrylic but goes on like a chalk type paint). work in sections at a time when waxing. Make sure to buff that section first before moving on to another section (example: wax the top of the desk first then buff before moving on to the legs). Lightly coloured glazing effect: within 20 minutes after applying the coat, wipe with a cloth or a white pad along the wood grain.

You can use a cheap brush or a wax brush to apply the wax. Make sure you remove loose bristles before using it. Multi-purpose cleaners such as washing up liquids and detergents are highly detrimental to the finished surface and is not recommended to be used as discolouration or staining may be possible.

Tips:

For application on antique or fine furniture apply the wax with a clean white lint-free cloth and allow to dry. When dry, buff to a fine finish with a clean white lint-free cloth. Further applications may be made in the same manner and will give increased hardness and shine.
