Simmering with slow-burning menace, Mrs England is a portrait of an Edwardian marriage, weaving an enthralling story of men and women, power and control, courage, truth and the very darkest deception. Set against the atmospheric landscape of West Yorkshire, Stacey Halls’ third novel proves her one of the most exciting and compelling new storytellers of our times. Review

Mrs. England: A Novel - Kindle edition by Halls, Stacey

Recommended: For me, the difference between 4 and 5 Stars is personal enjoyment, connection, and the wow factor. Even though I loved the histfic element, gothic and thriller are a bit out of my zone of enjoyment. I think others who love those aspects of the story will likely rate this 5 Stars because it’s well written and constructed and contains all the dark atmosphere and tension. I’m definitely recommending Mrs. England for fans of Rebecca and Jane Eyre and for readers who appreciate a tense histfic/mystery/thriller. Dazzling, dark, disturbing, and athmospheric are some of the words I have come across in review describing this book, but it fell short for me on many levels. The novel might be called Mrs England, and she is the enigmatic character of the house, but the story centres around Ruby May who works as Norland nanny. She decides not to move abroad with the family she works for and so finds employment with the MrsEngland of the title. Well, THAT turned out to be interesting....Like her previous novels, you can tell an immense amount of research has gone into this story. I loved the slow-building feeling of menace in the story, it’s so atmospheric and there were some moments that definitely gave me a feeling of dread. One of the most compelling things for me was the complex characters – so many of them are way more than they seem on the surface. Mr and Mrs England were brilliant characters and Halls has a brilliant way of making you question who they truly are. Ruby is a really interesting protagonist and I loved learning about her family and her past alongside her time with the Englands.

Mrs. England [Book Review] - Reading Ladies Mrs. England [Book Review] - Reading Ladies

Ruby is a Norland nurse with an impeccable reputation. She is sent to a new placement at an isolated family estate in the English countryside. She has an immediate connection with the four children and finds herself drawn into the mysterious relationship between her employers, Mr. and Mrs. England. Ruby becomes wrapped up in the mysterious happenings and questionable circumstances within the dark and eerie mansion.Ms. Halls does not disappoint and will have you staying up late so you can find out what's going on in this household and with each character. 5/5 I loved the character of Ruby and found her to be another strong female protagonist, something that the author is becoming known for. I enjoyed how the author dropped hints throughout the story about both Ruby’s past and the strange goings-on at Hardcastle House. I tried to piece it all together but there were twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end.

Get Involved with Mrs England by Stacey Halls – BOOK SOCIAL Get Involved with Mrs England by Stacey Halls – BOOK SOCIAL

Along with everything else, Mr. England was subtly controlling, and Mrs. England was quiet as a mouse. Mrs. England seemed to be afraid of her husband, and Ruby saw cigar burns on her hands. Precíz és a múltat felidéző prózájával Stacey Halls sokkoló, lenyűgöző és teljes mértékben valós világot varázsol elénk. Elejétől a végéig fogva tartott.” – Joanna Glen, a The Other Half of Augusta Hope Costa-díjra jelölt szerzője I recently enjoyed Bart Ehrman’s provocative and amusing Heaven and Hell: A History of the Afterlife. Ehrman reminds us that the Bible says almost nothing about these mysterious places, and that popular conceptions owe much to the fertile imagination of ancient fantasy writers. These literary inventions have infiltrated the collective consciousness, and reshaped the beliefs and politics of billions of humans to this day. All opinions are my own.

I have already read Halls’ account of the Pendle witches and she writes historical fiction from a female perspective. This is an undemanding novel, set I would guess in the early 1900s. It is a bit gothic and is a bit of a slow burner. The main character Ruby May is a Norland Institute nurse/nanny. After her first family emigrated she is sent to Yorkshire to the family of Mr Charles England and his wife Lilian and their four children. Each of the main characters has secrets which gradually unravel over the course of the novel. Halls also provides a pretty good description of how coercive control works. The setting is in the Hardcastle crags area of Yorkshire and there is a bleakness to it which is quite pleasing. acțiunea. At what point did you suspect it might be Mr England and not Mrs England that Nurse May needed to watch out for?
