Description

One thing to be aware of when you’re setting the exposure is that the P950 doesn’t have a wide dynamic range. Consequently, images tend to have high contrast with deep shadows and bright highlights. The large 1 cm (0.39 in) 2360k-dot OLED electronic viewfinder gives a clear view. An eye sensor automatically switches from monitor to viewfinder shooting as you lift the camera to your face. The aperture measures how much light comes in to the camera, so you'll get better results in dimmer light when making wide angle images. At f/6.3 at the 800mm equivalent setting and beyond, the big zoom power is much better used in bright, outdoor light than in dim conditions. The camera has a rather sizable pop-up flash, but it's not powerful enough to illuminate distant subjects. 357mm (2,000mm equivalent), f/6.5, 1/500-second, ISO 125 SLR Style Body and Controls

Rear buttons include a toggle to switch between the EVF and LCD (the camera does have an eye sensor for automatic switching) and to change the focus mode. The AE-L/AF-L button is at the center of the focus toggle switch. These two images were taken moments apart, from the same position, at the extremes of the P950's zoom range. The house which is central at 2000mm is a mere spec at 24mm. An improvement to the Nikon P950 comes in the shape of adding raw format recording support. This means you now have more flexibility to tweak images after the fact, which is likely to be welcome news for enthusiast photographers. Nikon’s SnapBridge app for iOS and Android must be installed on a compatible smart device before SnapBridge can be used with this camera. Cameras that look like the P950 used to be described as 'bridge' models: as in, they formed a 'bridge' between the capabilities and of a conventional compact camera, and a D/SLR. With the birth of the superzoom class a few years ago, with their enormous zoom ratios, this description became meaningless. Despite its unusual ability to connect objects across enormous distances, the P950 isn't so much of a 'bridge' between anything. It's (almost) in a class of its own. Key specifications:

Magnification of Dynamic Fine Zoom is calculated from the maximum wide-angle position of the optical zoom. Pricing and Availability Bluetooth Specification Version 4.1; Operating frequency: Bluetooth: 2402 to 2480 MHz, Bluetooth Low Energy: 2402 to 2480 MHz; Maximum output power: Bluetooth: 7.2 dBm (EIRP) Bluetooth Low Energy: 7.2 dBm (EIRP) With 5.5 stops of VR image stabilization, 166x Dynamic Fine Zoom, Target Finding AF capabilities and 7 fps continuous, the Nikon P950 enables stargazers and birdwatchers to capture high-quality photos or 4K UHD videos at extreme distances with ease. A 2359k-dot viewfinder includes a sensor for automatically detecting when the camera has been lifted to the eye. This 'finder is one of the key improvements made to the P950 over its predecessor, being over twice the resolution. It’s a much better experience and gives you a decent view of the scene in front of you. Compose incredible shots with the bright 8.1 cm (3.2 in) 921k-dot LCD monitor, which can be tilted and twisted in almost any direction. It’s easy to frame images when holding the camera up high or down low.

I assume you're referring to the gallery as a whole and not my 4K video which you replied to, as the D70 is incapable of 4K video, or even 4K stills. ;-) As the P950 uses the same sensor and lens combination as the older P900, the image quality remains roughly the same, although you now get the boost of Raw shooting (more on that later).

In fact, from some angles, the P950 doesn’t look great deal smaller than the full-frame Nikon D780. The Coolpix P950 camera also supports RAW (NRW) image capture, a capability usually reserved for full-frame mirrorless cameras and DSLRs. This function allows users to take full advantage of the many advanced processing and editing programs on the market.

Other areas haven't been upgraded, though. Nikon hasn't done anything to improve autofocus speed or accuracy. We'd also like to see a touch screen and a current-generation USB-C interface. Below it you find the Record, Play, Display, Menu, and Delete buttons, along with a flat command dial. The dial supports additional functions via its directional presses (Flash, EV, Macro, Self-Timer), and has the OK button at its center. It doubles as a tool for menu navigation—the P950 doesn't have a touch screen.Bird-watching mode lets you select three different AF areas to keep fast-moving subjects in focus. Moon mode optimises camera settings for clear astronomical images: ideal for capturing the moon in all its phases. Using a card slot or card reader, copy the “firmware” folder to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.

The 3.2-inch, 921K-dot vari-angle LCD monitor is carried over from the P1000 and is a handy upgrade on the 3-inch monitor found on the P900. Its flip-forward hinge makes selfies a doddle, and it gives an accurate preview of colour and contrast. The only slight bugbear is with most smartphones now having Retina-effect screens which effectively make the boundaries between pixels invisible, you can spot individual pixels on the P950's screen when viewing at a typical distance, making it appear a little low res next to a phone. Like the P900, the Coolpix P950 has a vari-angle 921-,000-dot screen on its rear. However, at 3.2-inches across its diagonal, it’s a bigger unit. Disappointingly, it’s not touch-sensitive. London, United Kingdom, 7th January 2020: Nikon adds to its impressive line-up of bridge cameras with the COOLPIX P950, which boasts an impressive 83x optical zoom. This robust superzoom camera updates the COOLPIX P900 with a range of sought-after features that make it exceptionally easy to capture distant subjects in extraordinary detail – in stunning close-up images and strikingly sharp 4K movies.

Get Unbelievably Close

Helpfully, there’s lens-base stabilisation (VR) available for use when shooting still images and both lens and electronic (digital) stabilisation for video shooting. The new Nikon P950 also adds RAW (NRW) photo recording, an enhanced high-resolution EVF and Nikon Snapbridge to seamlessly share images or remotely control the camera. It's this portability and zoom reach versus image quality trade-off that you'll need to seriously consider if you're deciding whether or not to buy a P950. While this is a camera that's capable of getting your closer to a distant subject than almost any other camera can, this is also its only selling point. Strip away the colossal zoom and the P950 performs much like a basic point-and-shoot camera, and one which even a mid-range camera phone will thrash in terms of image quality. The Nikon COOLPIX P1000 is one of the most extreme Nikon Zooms ever. It not only features a stunning 125x optical zoom (24mm – 3,000mm equivalent in 35mm) but also boasts a 250x Dynamic Fine Zoom that increases the focal length to 6,000mm—and extends the digital zoom to 12,000mm. The P900 comes with an 83x optical zoom (24-2,000mm equivalent). With so much range, both cameras have become the go-to for safaris and wildlife photography, but if you're looking for a little more range, the P1000 is your best bet. ISO sensitivity can be set manually, from 100-6400, and there are five Auto ISO ranges (100-400, 100-800, 100-1600, 100-3200, 100-6400). It is possible to set a minimum shutter speed from a range of 1 to 1/125 seconds, but you don't get the more advanced 'slower > faster' dynamic options that you do in higher-end Nikon cameras. Typically, the P950 prioritizes lower ISO sensitivity settings where possible, leaning on its powerful image stabilization system to keep things sharp. This works well except in lower light with moving subjects, where you might find that you need to take manual control over shutter speed to avoid blur.
