About this deal

In 2003 and 2004, Image and Robert Kirkman published several other superhero series: Tech Jacket pencilled in a manga style by E. Global Defense Agency: A government organization that the Guardians of the Globe and other superheroes work for.

Mark's dad is the superhero Omni-Man, a fairly obvious allegory for Superman from the power-set to the "benevolent" visitor-from-another-planet shtick. While the series does take some time before truly taking off, it’s safe to say that once it does, it’s hard to ignore its potential. Brit has had an even less substantial role, appearing a couple of times in the aforementioned brawls (understandable considering that after the last book Brit was somewhat-retired).One thing I noticed throughout reading this book is it pokes fun at Marvel/DC and some characters almost feel like Walmart versions of those franchises. Issues and editions of collections that predate 2010 (when Skybound was founded) were published solely through Image and will not have the Skybound logo. Initially the first three volumes focuses on Mark as Invincible, who begins working as a superhero with his father acting as his mentor, and meeting other heroes (including Robot, Rex Splode, Dupli-Kate and Atom Eve). At age seventeen, Mark begins to display superpowers, which come from his father being a member of the Viltrumite race, who, according to Nolan, pioneer the entire cosmos on a mission of benevolence and enlightenment. When Mark begins to manifest powers, his dad takes him under his wing and trains him to be a superhero as well.

Absolutely my favourite comic book run of all time and I think that's because it has a beginning, a middle and an end. Although he seems quite normal, maybe even boring to some, there’s one thing that makes him stand out from the rest of the world: his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet and he’s known as Omni-Man. Also, it's worth noting that some of the vocabulary used has aged very poorly, with characters sometimes dropping a casual slur that was relatively commonplace in the early 2000s but is rightfully off-putting today. Some of the layouts are a little crowded, especially in some of the fight scenes, and Kirkman's dialogue-heavy pages can lead to some overly dense pages, but the design of the series is top-notch.

It's a shame that it doesn't receive half the attention that Walking Dead does, as it's (IMO) the far superior title. Later the paths of Mark and his father diverge and lead to the possibility of a Viltrumite invasion in the future. His superhero life, however, will become his top priority as well encounter new worlds, new enemies and even more drama. It gives the combat the kind of stakes that Marvel and DC rarely achieve and gives you a sharp reminder that the costumed heroes you're invested in are inherently dangerous, regardless of whether they want to be or not.

Markus Murphy: Also known as Marky, he is the son of Mark and Anissa after the latter raped the former. Tech Jacket was first collected as a digest-sized, black and white graphic novel and later reissued in regular sized, full color and a cover scheme similar to Kirkman's other trade paper backs. However the character development does not take a backseat due to this and one will see the characters grow and their relationships develop with every curveball life throws at them. All images are owned by their respective copyright owners unless stated and are used for promotional and review purposes. For all of its stellar art and endearingly down-to-earth characters, Invincible ultimately amounts to pretty standard superhero fare. For years, I've been wanting to read this series and was constantly being told that it was one of the best superhero and best indie comics that you should read.
