In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated the neighborhood, which was inundated by ocean water and battered by strong winds. The community became majority Jewish by the 1930s; prior to the 1930s, there were signs in the community reading "no dogs or Jews". Highly atmospheric and vividly drawn, it was a pleasure to read the rolling descriptions of this picturesque British location. My heart definitely skipped a few beats while I was reading this segment of the story, it was both touching and sad.

The Sea Gate by Jane Johnson | Waterstones

We are situated in a picturesque fishing village, standing where the Taw and Torridge rivers meet before they flow into the Atlantic at Bideford Bay. Whether you like nature, history or want to head to the famous Devon coast, there's something for all the family to enjoy. The cast of characters was vastly diverse and well-drawn with despicable villains and endearingly flawed protagonists, but my favorite was the highly astute and humorously profane parrot. What I liked best about this book is author, Jane Johnson’s theme of coming to grips with life in a satisfying way from a wounded place. While sorting through the run-down house, with its secret tunnel heading out to the cliff, Becky starts to uncover mysteries and family secrets that started back during WWII.Sea Gate is largely populated by families living in single- and two-family houses, 54 percent being rentals. I particularly liked the way Becky’s renovation of Chynalls mirrors her own psychological and physical “renovation”. Glimmer volunteers herself, Bow and Adora to go to the kingdom of Salineas to recruit Mermista in the Princess Alliance. As Becky admits herself, “Fear has trapped me, rendered me immobile and powerless…fear of everything, really.

They look for a captain with a ship in the city of Seaworthy, a city which looks remarkably like Mos Eisley spaceport on Tatooine. Boasting the Atlantic Yacht Club from 1898 until it burned down in 1933, Sea Gate was an ideal location to spend a peaceful, breezy summer.Glimmer finds out that Sea Hawk purposefully brought them out of the way to experience an adventure with a giant sea-serpent, causing much consternation. The Sea Gate - Jane Johnson

A wonderful story that switches between dual timelines featuring two strong, courageous, and resilient women artists. There are some scary moments where the tension is palpable and some good laughs involving a foul-beaked parrot to even it out. Norton" was the name of the owner of a casino, which was situated where the Coney Island Light now stands. All sorts went on under the cover of the war: it was a desperate time and people behaved as if they might die at any minute. Despite being the “epitome of difference”, she and the other character form an unbreakable bond and a chain of events is set in motion that will have far-reaching consequences.STARS - The Sea Gate is a compelling and atmospheric saga set on the beautiful Cornish coast and is told in dual time frames by two women - Becky in current day and her elderly cousin Olivia's recollections of her life during WWII. The T-Groins will mitigate the loss of sand and protect the Community residences and surrounding areas from excessive damage from wave surges in the future. Her choices were odd - Rebecca meets an older woman who took care of Olivia, and there's a whole paragraph as she speculates if the older woman's teeth are her own. Rebecca immediately goes to visit Olivia in Cornwall only to find a house full of secrets—treasures in the attic and a mysterious tunnel leading from the cellar to the sea, and Olivia, nowhere to be found.
